Does anyone know anything about adding 2 stroke oil to their diesel?
Done it with my TD5 don't know if it sounds a bit better or I just want it to sound a bit better,
I don't think it can hurt much if you use low ash mineral type, and now they are taking the Sulfur out of diesel it might help those TD5 cam powered injectors, the TD5 is an old engine now and it was designed to run on what was available at the time it was made.
If you google it you will find all sorts but beware of what you find on the internet, some of it is pure BS.

All you are doing is adding lubricant can't see how it can clean anything.

Yes that's what I wanted to do, the Sulfur was put in as a lubricant at the time when TD5s were designed, now its gone, so now and again I add a bit of two stroke, those injectors get some hammer.
For cleaning look to the Miller stuff Now I am convinced that makes the engine run a bit better.
I also notice a difference in power and MPG when I use the Shell premium diesel.

Exactly how much do you add per tank?

I add about 200:1 ratio.
Need to get your tank capacity to calculate the amount, just fill up my small plastic bottle from the 5 ltr one, and pour it down the filler before I fill the tank.
You can read all kinds of testimonies on the web re how effective it is better to try it and see what you think, I bought a 5 litre bottle of cheap low ash two stroke and just do it about every third tank.

I tried the 2-stroke trick ( the red, mineral stuff ) and can honestly say I didn't notice any difference. I then tried Millers diesel additive and that definitely did make a difference to the 200tdi. Smoother and quieter compared to without, still a noisy old engine, but definitely better.

we run a cetane booster, and add 1% two stroke oil. It definitely makes a difference to the noise of 300TDi's, from our perspective.

@raywin - if the TD5's are old, the I guess the 300's are worth the extra costs involved :)

Agree that the oil should be mineral, and not synthetic - there is a good explanation of the chemistry on the web somewhere....

I cant find it now but some time ago I posted a link to an oil makers/blenders website they said 2 stroke oil not a good idea on common rail and if they are prepared to kill a potential market off they must have a good reason?
In an old ****ter like a tdi who cares it wont hurt.

Scroll down to the "Oil in Fuel" section here: http://dieselbob.co.uk/tips.aspx and also this page: http://dieselbob.co.uk/DieselFuel.aspx about fuel lubricity. DieselBob are at the top of the pile, so I'm inclined to take their advice!

FWIW if I run my 300tdi without two stroke oil in the veg oil (second tank setup) then the engine struggles to rev very high or make much power. Regular pump diesel is also improved in my disco with TSO added in small quantities as mentioned above.

The comments about sulphur removal and bio being added to pump derv are a bit scary for those of us with older oil burners, but does go someway to explaining how/why they're becoming older noisy/rattly old beasts..!

I wouldnt. I have never seen it do much good, and I have seen it do harm. It doesnt even dissolve well in diesel, if you drain a tank that has used it you find the stuff in a coloured pool in the bottom of the tank.

If you want a lubricity additive, and a cetane booster, try Millers Ecomax. Quite cheap too if you buy in bulk. Used it in both my landy and tractor since the low sulphur pish came out.

You say that about it not dissolving, but in the tank in my boot I can clearly see in the bottom of it and it's just not there! In the summer I run the diesel in the boot tank, and Veg in the main tank, and reverse this in winter. I've not seen it happen in the boot tank with either veg or derv, and both fuels get TSO in small quantities, as well as 2-EHN - if bothering with a cetane booster, just buy 2-EHN.

Millers is very good and I'd expect nothing less from them, but all the fuel cleaners/boosters use 2-EHN, so just cut out the middlemen and buy it direct from someone like Trinity fuels.
As said above, if diesel specialists like DieselBob are recommending TSO, then I can't see a problem.

I know we've had this discussion before though Turboman :D

Up to you what you do. Its your motor, and your money. Just saying what I have seen. :)

In my case, the cetane boost and cleaning are only side effects, it is actually the lubricity action I am after. Old CAV pumps were made to run slippery old mineral diesel.

BTW Forgot!

Anyone who just wants injector cleaning on an older pre TD5 vehicle, putting a gallon of petrol in the tank is as good as injector cleaner.

I might try a few litres of petrol in tank and see how it runs during and after

I put something in my tank a week or two before the MOT in the hope that it will improve the smoke test readings. Usually some sort of injector cleaner. This year it is going to be STP Pre MOT. It may well be that it doesn't make much difference, but it lets me feel I'm giving it the best chance. The thing is with TD5s there's not a lot you can adjust when they get very smoky, apart from give them new injectors which can be a little pricey. So it's snake oil for me.

I find LiquiMoly Diesel Purge a very good cleaner - run the engine off it neat for about 10-15 mins about once a year (before my MOT) and there's a noticeable difference afterwards in pull and emissions cleanliness. Just don't forget the new air filter before the MOT! :D

Can be quite effective if there is gum and deposits in the fule system. We used to use petrol as anti wax in the winters up norf as well.
Obviously, as it can loosen stuff in the fuel system, worth changing the filters a little while afterwards.
