Does anybodu know what has to be done if I was to replace my W reg P38 diesel engine (BMW 2.5) with an engine from a late nineties model BMW 325d.
My Rangie engine has run its main bearings so I want to replace the engine.

first check should be the numbers on the injection pump, range rovers and vaux omegas and some bmw cars had the part number ending in 994
bmw had various different numbers and none of these will work on a p38 the electronics are different.
to make it worse bmw also had different size holes that the pump sit in small hole and large hole (p38 large hole) small hole engine can be used but pump has to be machined down to fit or the electronics from the 994 pump needs to be swapped by a pump specialist onto small hole pump. some people have swapped the electronics themselves but not something i would recommend as the are set to hundreds of a mm, to far out wont rev up to far out the other way will rev itself to destruction.
apart from that sump has to be changed and use your manifolds and turbo etc

Not heard of the BMW engine needing new mains before - any idea why it happened? How many miles had the engine done?

Welcome to the site. Do a search, (site search not the google search) this has been done before with either an engine from the 325/525 or from the Omega.
The electronics on the FIP will have to be swapped, again others have done this sucessfuly.

Hi jerrytlr - no oil so I guess the turbo is probably screwed as well. The engine runs but knocks like hell.

I can get a secondhand P38 lump for about £400 but I was thinking that for that sort of money you can actually by a whole BMW car so I would be able to hear the engine running and then sell the rest for scrap but I might just stick to a P38 lump.

if you are going to go down the whole car route look for a vauxhall omega same injection pump as p38 guaranteed cheaper than bmws saw one a while ago ex motability with only 56000miles gen for £700!
