Probably an unusual question and having searched and not yet found an answer I thought I'd ask the gurus on here :)

Is it possible to swap out the standard 2.5 BMW diesel engine and fit a 3.0 BMW diesel engine??

Some more ponies under the hood would be nice and I'm not keen on piggyback ECUs, I'm fairly sure early 3.0s were pre common-rail so wondered if this could work....would it be a virtual 'swap the relevant bits across and plug n play' or would it be significantly more in depth

Can be done but worth the effort i think not. Chip the 2.5. M57s are common rail.

Would the manual box take it? That's supposed to take 380nm of torque, isn't it?

Of course, not sure how long the clutch would last.

LR boxes (manual) are under rated.it will take it as will the clutch.. (clutch though is easy uprated)
ie i run 400 hp+ though a lt85..used to run 6 pot 3.3 diesel 2 bar boost with lpg though a lt77..it gave me 50k trouble free miles.

I have a 330D to go in sometime next year, gota sort a gearbox out yet but an X5 box is on the cards for me, cant give any more info as I don't know myself yet till get the rest of the car sorted then will look into it and get the ball rolling.:D
