right someones told me they fit a 2.8 turbo diesel engine to p38 can anyone help on the info on how i can convert worried over the wiring ;)

How much do they charge?

and how much do you think it will be worth after the conversion is done?
Personally can't see anyone being very interested in buying it after the conversion.

Disco 2.5 LR engine to 2.8 Isuzu engine makes some sense because it is still somewhat of a "utility" vehicle and the 2.8 is supposed to be good for off-roading, and a resaonable upgrade from the 2.5Tdi.

Whereas the RR (P38) is a "luxury" vehicle, which has a nice smooth refined diesel in the line-up. I can't see anyone wanting a P38 with crappy utilatarian 2.8 Isuzu engine in it.

Just something to think about.

just looking for a way out really as iv`e found a few second hand 46 engine but the poeple selling them don`t seem to know a lot about them iv`e spoke to a few people and they reckon but it back together and get rid they say i can get a brand new block but not saying how long it will last:(

What exactly is wrong with it?

I'd speak to a specialist, there are *loads* of people who know every single inch of the rover v8, and would be able to tell you exactly what is / is not worth doing.

Matt.

hi maddock it`s done a liner leaking between the liner and the block striped of my heads today found the pass side bank to be perfect no problems drivers side bank no 3 culinder the liner has come out the block if you get what i mean it`s come higher than the block face but on the other three you can see a black ring round the outer edge of the liners but nothing on the pass side

The usual problem then!

Have you tried the magic fluid that you put in the coolant system which many people have reported fixing this issue? Use with caution - and use it properly (i.e. don't just shove it in with the existing coolant!) otherwise you may run into trouble, but worth a shot for £15 or so!

I used it to sort a head gasket problem on a Disco V8. It fixed it absolutely spot on and I never did do the head gasket properly all the time I had it!

Matt.

I'm not an expert on this one. Is it possible to replace the liner (yourself?) and then try the magic fluid approach? I've heard a lot of good reports with people using that stuff, and in my experience it worked a treat. Just a thought to get you up and running again as cheaply as possible.

Whereabouts are you based?

To answer all your questions, do the stepped liner job - it works very well.Seeing as you already have the heads off its most of the way to getting the rest of the engine out.The stepped liners are clamped in place by the h/gasket and give the gasket something to seal against - so it doesnt matter if the block material is cracked behind it.Ie the coolant can travel up the back of the liners but no further.I recently built a 4.0 v8 with stepped liners,it was in such good nick we only had to replace shells and cam/lifters.I even used the existing pistons and rings - might sound like bad practice but everthing measured up to well within limits. That engine now runs beautifully, using no oil or water and is so smooth.
The other part of your question is the 4cyl diesel thing - there is a company that fit Mitsubishi 2.8 td motors in Lp RR's.It is not a simple conversion as the existing engine Ecu has to remain in place and be fed certain inputs ( crank position sensor etc) to allow the rest of the cars electrics to carry on working.
Whilst they have that bit fairly well sorted out,the metal bits arent so good - the Mitsi motor doesnt really want to fit.The sump is too deep,so they put blocks on the front axle to stop the sump contacting the axle/track rod. This doesnt work very well as the Eas can no longer go down into access mode and the track rod still seems to rub its way through the sump.Flex plates also seem to shatter from vibration as well.
As for driving, the engine is just too agricultural for a RR - esp when idling, its like riding a jack hammer ! The only other 4cyl diesel conversion I have seen is a Mazda 3.5 4cyl - this was a much tidier and better thought out job but it has trashed a couple of clutches that I know of in the last 2 years - too much lumpy torque at low revs.
Do the stepped liner job,its the best overall solution - with no converting,no teething,no insurance worries and parts from any LR source.

cheers for that were can i get the liners and how much and how much did it cost you to have it machined to fit them cheers

The machining was done by South Cerney Engineering nr Cirencester,Glos. We sent them a clean bare block and it came back with the stepped liners fitted, they also put in new cam bearings. It cost about £750 inc vat.
On top of that we did a cam/lifters etc and a full gasket set.Have not got a phone no for them at home, but sure you could find them on the net or directory enquiries. There is also a company called ACR that advertise in LRO etc,but I have no personal experience of them.Hope this helps.

try a firm in bilston called e and d engineering, the lad named mick looks like a pikey but is a sound chap, he's a sort of cousin of mine ;)
