hello

i have a disco 1 200tdi 1993 and i posted a while back on about gettin a snorkle and a few people commeted etc so thanks.

but no i will like to know if i got my snorkle and fitted etc will i be able to go wading through water and will everthing be ok when i get out ??

is ther any over equitment needed ? plugs or out or anything you would recommend!!!

You'll need wading plugs for the timing cover and bellhousing, and extending your axle,gearbox,transferbox and any engine breather pipes would be a good move too. There are several peps on fleabay offering complete tubing and connector solutions for the breathers.
 
yes i just got one off ebay £25,, dont remember it sayin about plugs for the timing cover and bellhousing !!!!

You're alright, he's opted to supply extended vents for the timing cover and bellhousing instead of plugs. Normally you'd just have a pair of plugs that you'd screw into each before wading and then remove afterwards.

The point is that the timing cover and bellhousing both have drain holes to stop any leaking oil contaminating the timing belt or clutch, but whilst they need pluging for wading, they also need to be free to drain the rest of the time. According to your listing he's supplied extended vents instead of the plugs, but he should also provide guidance that they will need disconnecting regularly to allow oil to drain, cause if they reach upwards they're gonna fill with oil eventually and not do their job.

That one is cheap... and by the looks of it rubish.
Unless you dont get whats on the pic...

I can see 7 elbows and 3 Ts...
you need one elbow for each axle...both connecting to a T
then one elbox for gearbox breather, one for transferbox breather ( I just used a T on the original breathers that come up to the engine bay), both connecting to a T
Then another elbow from timing belt...which has to connect to a T.

So... you have one T used by the axles, 1 T used by gear and transfer box. these 2 connect to the third T, leaving one free connection on this T..which should be for the timing belt? then... it's all the 3 used..? as I said, the pic might be different from what you get...

and what he says about other sellers not selling breathers for timing belt.. wrong!!!
I get my stuff from axle deep and this is a proper breather kit I get, see the plug with the elbow for the breather?

Someone posted this list of items to get from a plumbing supply shop:

"The engine/gearbox wading plugs are 1/4 inch BSP thread, you can pick them up at the local Plumbers merchants for pennies.
The axle breathers are 1/8 inch BSP, if you ask at your local hydraulics or pneumatics supplier you can get hold of a couple of 90 degree push-fit elbow fittings and a few metres of 6mm plastic tube cheap as well, they will probably have the 1/4 BSP blanking plugs as well :gr8:
While your there, get a couple of 1/2 inch BSP blank plugs to replace the plastic efforts on the Radiator and Thermostat housing, which get brittle with age and break."

Has to be said ... most of this is mostly unnecessary for most green-laning, especially if, as it sounds like, you're a newcomer to it.

Best thing you can do is find a mate with another vehicle to go with and get out there. Don't be too enthusiastic and try lanes that are dodgy, especially rutted or deep mud, you're very likely to get stuck and need recovery .. which is where the second vehicle comes in! So I'd suggest if you've not been laning before a snorkel and wading kit probably isn't the first thing you need, and that you'd be better off with good recovery points and time spent driving offroad.

I certainly wouldn't recommend you cross anything so deep that you need a snorkel until you have at least a basic grasp of off-road driving techniques.

Just a thought ...

You can wade up to 500mm easily without a snorkel, and deeper with proper technique ... but make sure the snorkel's sealed properly and the whole air inlet side is water-tight, including the airbox etc.

yu dont need anything to go greenlaning. A mate is critical. Recovery ponts aee a goid idea. AT or MT tyres are nice. Just take it steady and yu will be fine. If freelanders can do it with AT tyres, then yu dont need lift kits or snorkels etc. When yu get ibto it, then drain plugs, breather extensions maybe.
 
As an aside - yu dont need breather kits for timing cover or bell housing. Plugs are more than adequate. They dont need to "breathe". Just remember to remove the plugs every 6000 miles to allow any leaked oil to drain out.
 
If I remember right, and I probably don't, someone told me you can bung the timing and clutch holes with bottle corks...

And what they said ^^^^. Have some fun on little lanes and wait a while before you add the bits. I've been out a few times now and still don't feel (quite) ready for deep wading - maybe later this year!
 
As you're in Hull, if you fancy a trip out around Doncaster/Retford area on some mostly easy with a couple of 'awkward' lanes then post up. I can't do it this weekend or next, but after that ... )
