I have bought a Disco 3 to replace my freelander 1. After towing from Devon up to Scotland, Wales, and several round Cornwall I decided to upgrade. Caravan is 1600kg so close to the 2000kg freelander1 limit. I was unaware of any limits for the swan neck sold with every Disco 3, and understandably confused how they could be sold if not up to the required strength to last when used according to the supposed ability.
If you search for the disco3forum, there used to be proper drawings to make the bolt up plate to keep the tow bar locked in, plus no bugger can nick them either.

The d3 is a decent car if you look after it, though some are just utter money pits with one cheap owner after the next.

Found pic in my album.
This one is stainless and the guy used to sell them on ebay.
I made my own from mild steel.

you buy a car with a towing capacity of 3500kg, with a supplied manufacturer tow bar, then think a **** in a hat knows more?

If the car is rated and the tow bar is for said car then carry on you are not doing anything wrong.

Problem like all used cars is, you never know what it has been used for in a previous life.

Same as the famous oil pump casing failures/crank failures, I always feel there is a back story to every one.
That is not to say they are not weaknesses, they are but they are brought forward by circumstances.

I think a VOSA traffic officer should know what is current. They tend to specialise in road and vehicles.

You think 🤔

Did he show you why or any paperwork?

It wasn't me, but a friend towing a 3 ton digger. My concern is if the tow point is weak I will have to fix it, as a previous thread says, I have no idea how mine, or even if mine, was used by the 5 previous owners, and this is an unexpected extra cost. It was bought to tow.

If you are reading “occasional use” what is that?

It can tow. How far do you tow?
we have dragged trailers even with a horse box on trailer to here “occasionally “ but its 3 days constant.
Admittedly we have a RR ;)

Fit an aftermarket tow bar if you want but standard fitment should be up to a few hundred miles with a caravan at weekends.

We've done over 2000 miles towing since covid. I would say that's more than occasional towing. I guess I will have to get a stronger tow hitch, otherwise I'll be worrying too much to enjoy my 'new' Disco. Better safe than sorry.

Traffic officer is an arse I rarely meet one that knows much more than what they learnt when they learnt to drive or what someone else tolled them.
More recently was pulled over for passing a cop car I was in the bus lane he in the traffic cue in the right hand lane......I did have to explain the big blue sign with a bus, motorbike and cycle meant I could use it on my motor bike 🏍 😑
