Hi my Freelander is making grindy bearing noises at front.......if you brake
it reduces drastically......I have had new pads and disks and new wheel bearings........still bad if not worse.......

The noise varies with road speed and is apprant right up through to at lease 60mph..........dipping the cluch makes no difference....but a light tap of the brakes does.

I have changed the oil in the ird and put some friction reducer in....

(I have owned truck 6 months now....noticed that the car was tight....and replaced vcu....this made the truck feel great.......)

I fear the IRD is dying.......... this is making me very depressed.....is there any chance the new brake pads could be installed incorrectly....causing grindy symptoms............:(

if the pads are rubbing on the discs it will make a grinding noise. sometimes stones trapped between disc and disc cover can make a grinding noise. if it is the ird then removing the vcu and driving in 2wd will be a means of finding out.

Wheel bearing? Jack it up and try rocking the wheel with your hands at 0600 and 1200 and the same again but at 0300 and 0900. You'll probably find play pointing to a knackered wheel bearing.

Does it sound like this? [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6rqaBgzJws"]YouTube - ‪Freelander 1 v6 Squeal‬‏[/nomedia]

Check that your caliper pistons are retracting when you release the brakes and that the caliper sliders are free. Are the brakes very hot after use?

Hi all ......... replaced wheel bearings ... if anything noise worse, Hippo mine sounds kinda similar to your you tube clip ......... anyway things have moved on a bit ... which is forcing my hand ......... my clutch has started to slip on really steep gradients in high gears.......... So I'm afraid the ird will have to come out ....... so I may as well put in a reconditioned unit together with a new clutch. I assume it is good policy to replace the hydraulic slave cylinder ...... I would imagine it fool hardy to use the old one.
As my freebe has only just started slipping do you think there is a good chance surface of flywheel is not damaged .... it is smooth with no judders or vibration. Regarding - ird have heard it is common for driveshat bearing to fail ........ on drivers - side. Are there know weeknesses on the gearbox side........... Thanks for your feedback so far your commens are much appreciated. Meanwhile I will keep you all posted with my Gearbox/IRD out antics ......

Hi just to put you all in picture ...... a few months ago I changed the IRD oil ...... the mag plug was like a little christmas tree!!! The noise a get is like a deep grumbling/grindy sound ..... which appears to come from directly under dirvers control pedals....the noise is getting worse .... with intermitant orrible whirry noises......car done 113k and has a recent reconditioned VCU..........
