RANGE ROVER P38 2.5 DIESEL AUTO LATE 2000 MODEL

Hi Guys – I am posting this fault in the hope that some suggested diagnostic / cure may come my way.

Symptoms are:
1) Delay in shifting from 2nd to 3rd can go up to 3000+ RPM before changing unless I ease off the accelerator.
2) When I reduce speed and coast down under braking there is a distinctive clunk between 2nd and 1st- I can’t tell if it’s coming from the front or the rear. (I would hazard a guess it’s at the rear).
3) Apart from that the drive seems to be ok.
4) No warning lights.
5) Transmission Fluid level checked at sump (engine warm and in neutral).

On the day the symptoms appeared the only thing I remember doing was driving to the MOT station with freshly fitted pads and I occasionally applied the brakes whilst still driving to bed them in ? I have read about the throttle positioning sensor and wondered if I have throw this out of alignment – or maybe this is totally unrelated.

Any suggestions would be welcome
Regards Neil

If the revs are rising on the shift, it's flaring, got the same problem! When was the oil and filter last changed? Should be done every 24K. Level should be checked with the box COLD, engine idling.
Lucas Transmission Fix sorted mine for a while.
If the engine is chipped or has a power box, the gearboxes often fail.

Thanks for the reply ... I do have a chip upgrade fitted and was toying with the idea of removing for a trial period. Is the gearbox damage irreversible? I’m also planning on replacing the transmission fluid. It looks like a straightforward drain at the sump and refill to the level plug? Is there a filter ?? I’m confused when you mention oil change ... do you mean transmission fluid or engine/gearbox oil ??

Transmission fluid should be changed every 24 K miles there is a filter in the sump which should also be changed. Make sure you have the O ring for the filter and a set of Torx bits. You will only get 5 litres out. When re-filling it must be cold, fill tiil it runs out of filler, start engine and move gear lever through all positions, leave in neutral and with the engine idling continue filling until the oil dribbles out. A second change after a couple of hundred miles will dilute the 5 litres of old oil that you cannot get out. Good idea to put transmission fix in while you are at it, might just help and remove the chip/powerbox which takes the engine torque over the limit for the box.
