They do if they have an electronic fuel pump. All of the new engines have been designed with electronic pumps so they can be shut down. I have never heard of a diesel running off of sump oil, but then again; we tend to build our engines so they don't leak oil everywhere

Sounds like one for Myth Busters. What do you call it when it happens? I grew up on a farm with all sorts of diesels at different levels of despair and have been a truck driver up til about two months ago. This thread is the first I have heard of such a thing. Sounds logical, but I don't understand why it don't happen here? When ever we need to cut a runaway off we pull the ground wire from the fuel pump....and it shuts it down.What happens is the breather can take oil mist from the engine feed it in via the inlet manifold, engine runs on its own oil, or it can come up through the piston rings for one reason or another. Turbo engines tend to do it when the oil seal breaks on the inlet side.

Had a Rabbit; most of them have been scrapped. that was a different issue,they were trying to tweak the pump for more power and the pump rack jammed in full fuel position,which will accelerate the engine to destruction,good telly tho.If you watched the series of scrappy racers on chanel 4. the barley pickers yellow tractors engine ran away with it itself and burnt all oil then broke some push rods i believe! it was some good TV it was pumping more smoke than a land rover diesel!
You really dont know jack **** do you,GM Detroit 2stroke engines were used in just about every truck/bus/coach you can think of in the US.Yeah....they hate it when that happens, but it does make for a good show... Are you guys talking about 2 cycle diesels? I think you will find that your street landys have 4 cycle in them and can not burn up there own sump oil. I could be wrong though...would not be the first time. I know here in the US 2 cycle is only used in industrial applications, not in road vehicles.

Not anymore dip****.....modern diesels here are four stroke... just jump on a diesel forum for a minute or two and you would know that. I don't know what year the 2s went out, but we didn't start putting diesels into light trucks until the 80s and they are 4s....
