It must be a rich person thing. I have friends who are rich (they have five homes) and they invest everything, the guy bought a £5,000 MX5 as a toy and beat himself up for years about it.

The only thing that seems to make millionaires happy is even more money and the chance to flaunt it (with a few exceptions).

What's the point in buying a car in the vain hope that it will increase in value? Buy it, drive it, fix it till you can't fix it anymore and then scrap it. A vehicle loses value by just leaving the forecourt.

Absolutely right. The value of a vehicle is the use you can get out of it, with the exception of a very few real vintage cars, like Bugattis.

And diesel vehicles, like Defenders, are increasingly becoming the subject of environmental regulation, which will make them quite difficult to sell in the medium term.
 
All non electric cars will be scrap within 10 years if the leftie liberals and EU have their way. Who on here can even afford a new petrol/diesel car, let alone an electric car at nearly £10k more.

More like about 20 years, 2040 is the current proposal for an end to IC engines, and that will only be new cars.

There are plenty of good deals around on second hand cars, both petrol and diesel. And by that time, there should be plenty of good second hand electrics around.
I am hopeful I won't be driving at all any more by 2040, it isn't a great pleasure any more, due to congestion, and alternatives are improving all the time.
 
I'm waiting till someone designs a good electric conversion for the Defender. I know there has been a few conversions done, but I want a drive in/drive out kit.

The good thing with 2nd hand defenders is they dont really lose any money like normal cars.
i paid 4.3k for my 90 over 8yrs ago and still reckon its worth 4.3k
I paid 12k for my D3 4.5 yrs ago and reckon it might be worth 6k if the buyer squinted a bit!
 
Unfortunately, the 4.3 k is now only worth what 3.5k was worth 8 years ago.


So even if its lost 800 quid in 8 years, thats still a bargain as my D3 has lost at least that each and every year, the D3 was old when I bought it so just imagine what a D5 is depreciating at each year!

My last van lost £10,000 in six years. The 110 costs more to run but not THAT much more!

I reckon l am £10,000 better of than if l had bought another new van in 2014 rather than the 110.

And l have had a lot more fun with the Defender than with a Transit van
