Hi everyone,

I purchased a genuine Defender work lamp from Land Rover this weekend. Unfortunately it doesn't come with any fitting instructions, so I need your help!

I am going to fit the lamp to the near side rear of my 2003 CSW. As I have a CSW I want to make any wiring "invisible" to my passengers.

Does anyone know what the best wiring route will be for the lamp cables? I intend to use a relay...I assume the correct location for the relay is near the battery under the passenger seat????

Any advice would be welcome!

....Someone somewhere know's the answer.....I really want to get the drill out the weekend and fit the lamp. If you don't know for sure, an idea would be appreciated

Well I would like to know the same thing, but I will share with you how I had planned to do it:

- Bolt light onto wagon.
- Put an external plug and socket on the light and wagon respectively (easy to disconnect and remove light then)
- Run heavy wire from the socket, behind the window shroud and along the rail under the alpine light. Then out from behind the shroud and down the corner of the bulkhead\passenger seat into the seat box.
- Connect the light wires, battery wires and switch wires to the relay in the seat box.
- Cake the relay in silicon and attach to side of box.
- Run the switch wires under the carpet to the fuse box in front of the gear lever. Through the hole at the top of the box (behind the radio) and right into the instument panel. From the right of the instrument panel to the switch (one that lights up - preferably)
- Connect the wires from the relay to the battery.

Then use a long wooden pole to operate the switch, whilst cringing, looking the other way and sniffing for smoke.

Thanks for your help, this is what I ended up doing:-

Purchased a relay kit and some convoluted tubing.

Bolted on the lamp, with a bit of clear mastic between the bracket and the roof upright to avoid any possible water leaks.

Ran the wires as you suggested along the rail under and Alpine light, dropped the wire down behind the plastic interior trim and down in to the passinder seat box. The exposed wire behind the passinger seat was covered with convoluted tubing to keep it tidy.

I then made up a loom of black, red and blue wire, run the loom from the switch in the dash through the bulkhead (more convoluted tubing) under the vehicle to the passender seat box. I followed the route of other cables going to the same place

Spent about 20 mintes putting everything together.....and it works! The relay came with a fuse, so if it does pop, it will be a 5 minute job to replace it under the passinger seat.

I have plans for my external lights:

The front facing spots will come one via a new switch, and\or when I toggle full beam.
The work lights will come on with another new switch and\or when I engage reverse.

I like the idea work lights going on in reverse and being able to manually switch on if needed...very posh

I like the idea of operating any new electrics with a long wooden pole. Is this a standard land rover accessory? Could you let me know the part number as mine appears to have been worn out by the previous owner.
