Turbo's are the best silencers anyway! Boxes just make back pressure which restrict the turbo. My mate has a 3.0 turbo supra and we changed his 2 cats and 2 boxes for one stright pipe and it was miles faster more economical and fruitier. But still wasn't loud at all!

Wel the boxes won't produce back pressure but they will stop the gas gettng out as fast, which isnt what you want on a turbo engine. On a non turbo car you need back pressure but on a turbo car back pressure isn't great.

I've done the same not long ago.. took me a few hours, including cutting bits of exhaust and welding it together to replace the back box..

the straight through pipe.. bough from MM4x4, got it on the next day!

Back box replacement pipe all welded, couple of bends in it to go over the chassi rail.
When I did it, was going to get the exhaust coming out up on the rear quarter, but couldnt be bothered to drill the hole on the panel, so it just comes out in the normal place...

I have a S/S Janspeed System from the Manifold back on my 110 (19J), Sound alright :) Sounded better when i run it with just the down pipe though :D

what are the legal requirements for an exhaust thou ? thought you were meant to have at least 1 silencer or sommet

When was the last time your MOT man measured the noise of your exhaust? All he looks for is that it does not leak and is soundly mounted.

I had a motorbike fail an MOT because he deemed the exhaust to be "excessively loud". It was simply his opinion as far as I can tell. I took it to a different test centre and they passed it. (This was in the days before BS stamps, etc. on exhausts).

I would think you'd have to find a pretty miserable tester to fail a turbo-ed Landy with a straight through exhaust though. The turbo does a remarkable job of reducing the exhaust noise. Replacing with a straight-through pipe is most definitely on my "to do" list.

I have bikes.and they have loud pipes.

They all go to the same MOT place, as long as there isnt a "not for road use" stamp, they all pass.

According to the MOT tester, he's not going to have one bike of each, with standard exhaust, so he can compare if the one he's testing is too loud...

I've never had the problem since - I think I just picked a test centre that had a w**ker working in it!

So, its ok to run a straight exhaust with no silencers on a turbo diesel engine?

Thanks.

Wasn't thinking of the noise, more the removal of the cat and egr, I know MOT rules and regs are getting tougher and was pleased to hear this was allowed. Athough you should contact your insurer.

just asked my dad who is an mot tester and he says he can faiul it if its excessively loud our unlike other vehicles of a similar size and shape, a sports car is allowed to be louder than a landrover cos every other sports car is loud unlike most landrovers that are agrigultural sounding so he can fail them if he thinks there too loud he doesnt have its up tpo the individual testers judgemet

so you have removed the box near the front and just running the rear silencer bit/thingy?

Im going to be taking all mine out the next few weeks and just fitting a cherry bomb and side exit behind the passenger door.

G

also a 300

can you still get the cherry bomb system if so i want a 4" oval either side being fed by a cherry bomb diver mid baffle fookin deaffoning
those were the dayz

I'd raise merry hell if the tester failed my Landy with a perfectly sound exhaust on noise alone and then passed a louder Ferrari because they are all deemed noisy. I'd first off want to see where it is written down that sports cars are allowed to be louder and by how much and compared to what. Sounds like a licence to print money. Excessively loud is different for everybody. What if the tester was deaf?

like i said its the testers judgement quite a few things on the test are his judgement some will fail it if its too loud most wont as longf as it meets emmissions regs and its a sound exhasut there wont be much problem with it

i have a 200tdi with a straigth through middle but want a straight through tailpipe, other than making one yourself which involves welding(wouldnt have a clue) does any one know if you can buy one off the shelf? ive looked about but cant find any. side exit looks good. Cheers
