Hi all,

I've done a search but there are so many responses to this issue that it didn't help for once.

I've got a knocking coming from the underside of my Defender TD5 110sw.
It happens on mildly rough surfaces (old roads or gravel car parks) as a dull knock knock. Particularly if the steering wheel is wobbling slightly. I can't tell if its from the front or back but I can feel it in the footwell ever so slightly.

It DOESN'T happen:
At any particular speed (no difference if fast or slow.
When cornering.
Going over proper bumps like speed bumps or mini roundabouts.
On nice smooth roads.

I'm not hugely mechanically minded (yeah I know.. why have I got a defender?!) but I've had a look underneath and all I can tell is that its not the exhaust system being loose. The UJs on the propshafts are mucky after all this weather so I've given them a spray with WD40, but when it comes to ball joints, and all the arms under the engine.. I'm at a bit of a loss on what is normal and what isn't

Any help please?

Hello,

It may be of benefit to give all the joints / bushes etc a bit of a going over with a pry bar, like happens during an MOT test.

Also , get it on axle stands and getting to rotate everything and see if anything knocks.

What do you mean you sprayed the UJ's??

Cheers

Mine dont do it at all, but if it did I'd go for the easy option first check the exhaust as Marmaduke suggested

OK, I see you edited the OP since my reply, to include you sprayed your UJ's with WD40..

Not really the way to do it, get a grease gun and grease the UJ's.

Cheers
