Changing the filters today and have lost a nut and a bolt from the centrifugal oil filter housing into "nowhere" in the engine. Are they just a metric M6 nut and bolt? Why they put things that need to be regularly accessed in such stupid places is beyond me.
 
you shouldn't need a nut unless someone has stripped the threads in the housing. I think on mine it's just a normal bolt and both are the same

Same on the Disco's, I stripped one side and literally put a longer bolt through and nutted it, pain in the backside reaching over the bonnet to do it though!
 
Where do those bolts, nuts, circlips go? After so many years there must be enough to build a washing machine floating around under my bonnet.
 
Who knows, more likely to be nearly enough junk floating around to completely bugger something knowing my luck!! I put some new 40mm M6 bolts on, but now no whirring when the engine shuts down now. It was Mahle filter.
 
My filter cover bolts straight into the lower casing with no nuts used.
I fitted new filters in both our TD5's last month, one has the "winding down" noise after use, but the other is not audible (from standing in front of the vehicle)
However if you open the bonnet and put your ear up close to it, you can hear it.
 
To be fair I'd only had it idling and only long enough to fill up the main oil filter and check for leaks. After a run it my show itself. I did check it spun freely inside the housing but once the cover is on there's no way to tell.
 
My mate adjusted the tightness of the bolts and can now just hear it whirring. He also had a good suggestion of placing one end of a socket extension on the cover and the other end near your ear and you can hear it much easier.
 
I managed to strip the threads on mine too... luckily I still had enough thread left to just fit a longer bolt.
I have also dropped the bolt and took ages to get it out from behind the engine mount, between the block and the mount!... this may be the new location of your missing nut?
 
I have had the same problem finding the threads stripped on my "new" 110 and was not able to torque up the bolts after renewing the filter. I resolved the issue by fitting a couple of 6mm studs with nuts on the back and slotted tops so I could get a screwdriver on them to hold the while I fitted nuts (fiddly but I managed with a bit of patience). I dropped a bit of threadlock down the original treads so the studs remain in place then fitted the top and torqued up ok. This way I shouldn't have any problems with my nuts in future (a nasty problem at the best of times).
 
I have noticed that some centrifugal filters are a bit tight on the bearing shaft in my TD5.
I reamed the filter bearing to get an acceptable spin on it...
