Dear Friends,

I have a Sep.07 Hard top Defender. With the summer approaching (allegedly) I am thinking of putting on a soft top on.

Could any one advise me of the easiest/cheapest way of doing this. How easy is it to go back to hard top when the winter comes.

Best wishes,

Paul

Hi PML50,

Unfortunately it's not just as easy as unbolting the roof, cutting the rubber seam around the windscreen and then lifting the roof off (which is actually how easy it is to take the roof off!), You need some extra metal bits which usually comes as part of an expensive kit (and the price is really the only bad bit). Take a look here: Exmoor Trim & Trakkers - Land Rover Interior Trim, Hood and Seat Specialists You'll need the canvas / soft back, a strip of metal that goes across each door top, a part that fits along the top of the windscreen, a few hood sticks (which give the soft top its rigid frame) and then there are two other metal panels which fit on the back end of each door. All the necessary parts come together as a kit which costs within the region of £140, plus the canvas its self.

Have a look on ebay, you'll probably pick them up cheap on there, but beware. The sellers will kore than likely not give you the extra bits that you need.

Here's a link if you can't be arsed to type it in:
eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

Well worth it though I reckon.

I did this to my 1986 90 in october... got the compleate tilt (canvas) and roof hoop set off flebay for £350 the seller turned out to be a very genuine chap who delivered the kit to derby from southhampton for £50 in his epson green p38... me and two mates had it all fitted in the afternoon reciently got series doors and i drive around all the time with the door tops off and the canvas rolled up at the back and sides its great... does not seem any colder over the winter months cant wait till the summer... next job roll bar! i have one that need modification to fit. if you need any help of advice then free to pm me

Hi Paul. how did you get on with your conversion? I've just done a 1994 300TDi, didn't want to do my 07 Hard top, better to do an older one & keep it as a soft top.
