Hello All,

Just bought a Defender where the spare is mounted on the roof rack. I need to use this space for my kayaks so I want to mount the spare on the rear door.

Anybody know the name or part number for the mount for the rear door? It's a '96 D90 and here's a photo of the holes on the door:

I've got one you can have on your way through from New York to Moscow? LOL

You might not want it when you see what it did to the frame on my old door that it's still attached to :)

Swingaways are the thing to go for definitely, the rear door on a defender just isn't strong enough IMO
 
I am just replacing my rear door, which had a spare wheel carrier fitted, it cracked every one of the braces it was mounted to, if I where you I would save up for a swing away bracket.

Exactly! Swingaways are really expensive, which is a shame, but a new rear door is pretty costly too :)
 
I would consider fitting a spare wheel swing mount rather than just fitting the three pronged wheel carrier to the back door. The spare is quite heavy and over time will warp your back door. You can get a spare wheel mount that connects at two points on the right hand side of the rear and therefore spreads the weight of the spare wheel.
 
As above spend some more dosh on a swing away wheel carrier. My back door is in bits after only 6 years and I now must buy a door and a carrier.
 
£99.00 swing away is probably your best bet, or for a couple quid more the one that opens with the door.

I removed the rear door card today searching for a knocking at the back.
Same as Bluemack above all 4 welded joints around the spare carrier had cracked.

So out with the sander and oxy-aectylene and that was soon sorted.
Every corner now has 50mm triangle strengtheners welded in.

A couple of small patches on the bottom of the door frame, sorted.

Then a repair to the door handle box with a bit of stainless and a MIG welder.
Two coates of hammerite plus door card refitted.

Knocking noise gone and one happy driver again.

It'll last my lifetime now.:)
 
I would agree that a swing away carrier is the best option but you should get one that opens with the door..... I am lead to believe that the ones that swing away separate from the door prevent anyone from opening the door to get out from the inside.... not good in the event of an accident
