I am looking for a mid to late 1990s, possibly up to 2002, Defender, I'm not expecting it to be an easy process! But does anybody have a feel for where prices are? I note that quite a few going unsold and being relisted on eBay, a lot of this I think is down to overpricing in the first place and some of it due to most of them having being 'molested' with terrible checker-plate rash (most of it to cover corrosion I'm sure) or other mods everywhere. Some are obviously dogs and well worth passing by but I do wonder if prices are possibly falling or is it simply some people are just trying to get too much money?? Some are asking between 8 and £10,000 for late 90s models – is that where the market is or is it overheated.
Any views would be much appreciated!

Wish full thinking for some of the prices, hoping some snow further North will add an incentive ...

Which version do you want? Station Wagons are the most expensive.

I have just spent some time looking, and good ones start at around £10,000

lgnore silly dealer prices closer to twenty, they don’t sell at that money.

We ended up with a very clean 2005 XS 90 SW at £14,500

But the XS version is more expensive again.

I did see a couple of good looking TD5 CSW under £10,000 but they were the earlier pre 2001 version.
 
Any 110 that is half decent seems to be £10K plus regardless of whether in the 90s or early 2000s. We looked but cant justify over my 90.
 
It took me a year to find my 90 and prices are going up, demand for Defenders that have not been ruined by modifications exceeds a dwindling supply.
 
Prices for good original ones are certainly not going down as far as l can see

Probably not in rural areas.

However, anywhere close to London, Birmingham, or other major centres of population where ULEZ is mooted, they are very hard to sell.

Don't overpay, you should be able to get a good 90s model for 5-7k, and older ones often aren't a lot worse if not cut about.

Be prepared to travel, there are good deals to be had in and around cities. Those areas are feeling the pressure of anti diesel regs, and the vehicles are often low mileage, and not been off road much, if at all.
 
I’ve just been up to my local LR specialist and they have a very nice TD5 at £12,000

It’s a SW conversion but at least that means lower road tax. The chassis is superb on it and the body unmarked.

Don’t underestimate the benefit of buying from somewhere with a warranty. I paid £14,500 for a very nice looking XS SW and have spent over £2,000 on work that would have at least in part been under warranty if l had bought it from a dealer.

These vehicles are at least fifteen years old. I’ve had to replace the drive shafts, battery, starter motor, injector seals, a new rear door plus minor surface corrosion on the rear panels, rear brakes, ABS fault, steering damper, front bumper, fuel filter housing, wheel alignment, alarm system replacement, vent flap pins, windscreen wiper drive, and side lights on this one.
 
For a good 110 regardless of age , with reasonable mileage , and full mot ....... your looking 12K + and the prices are Going up .. if its a limited edition, used only as a car, low number of owners, overland ready , and so on ... expect to pay a little more .

I wouldn’t be put off with checker plate , mine has some not to hide anything , but because I like it .... the parts which matter cant be covered bulk head and chassis ....
 
You can always remove the chequer plate if you don’t like it.
Checker plate on the sills won’t be covering anything serious, likewise on the wings (most likely dented under the chequer plate!) and bonnet.
Rear lower wings behind the wheels, it doesn’t really rot there and it’s just part of the “chequer plate kit” that LR offered.

If it’s on the bottom of the doors l would budget for new doors
Likewise across the rear crossmember, that would make me worry somewhat.
