I've had a search around and I can't find much that will suit my needs. Its to fit a Double Cab Pick Up with a drop down tail gate (which I am keeping).

I've currently got the Britpart carrier which is secured shut via the antiluce connector, which is not ideal as i've now been through 2 in a year and had a couple near misses where it comes loose and swings open! I "solved" it by having a carabiner "locking" the antiluce down but very occasionally I forget to clip it back and thus it swings open... Today it hit a tree and bent the bar  I can bend it back but ideally looking for a better solution.

I also do not want the uber expensive Naka unit, £900 for a carrier is just far too much!

Any suggestions? Even if they are for somewhere else to keep the 285/75 spare*

(*The spare cant go in the loadspace, as I need the space, cant go on the boot lid as im constantly strapping things to it, roof I'll never get it up or down alone, don't want it on the bonnet.)

Your options are for brand new swingaway wheel carriers for pickups are

1) Britpart which is a cheap version of the Safari Equip one

2) Safari Equip

3) Nakatanenga

4) Allisport

5) Kaymar

If you think the Nakatanenga wheel carrier is expensive have a look at the Kaymar!

On the second hand or new/old market there are the Mantec version VPLDR0129 . No longer manufactured

If you change the drop down tailgate to a side hung door then you can use the standard wheel carriers.

However if going down this route best get a proper half door. Using the standard drop down tailgate as a side hung door you would have to pack out the door plate due to the central rib on a drop down tailgate.

Cheers ill have a look through!

Not changing the tailgate as its used as a work bench on site, coffee/kitchen table when offroading/laning etc...

My main issue is how the carrier fixes shut to the tailgate. The steel cable that comes with it is pony and just snaps under the weight of the wheel flying open. Tried a few methods of securing it but not found anything yet. Chain was good but kept getting caught when trying to close it

Anyone modified one to accept a gas ram?

Replace antiluce with positive locking sprung bolt & plate?

Easy modification to it and it just needs slammed shut & job done.

Have seen a photo of one modified to take a gas strut on the top bar. No idea how successful it was in practice. If I can remember where I saw it I will put up a link.

Sorry to say that I can't find that exact rear bumper & wheel carrier thread but these are better pics and build.

Probably about the best latching system I've seen on a wheel carrier.

Fu ck yes. That is EXACTLY what i am after!

If we meet i owe you a beer, maybe two!

Pretty similar to a defender door latch/lock design.

I shall start working on an idea :D
