Okay, I took a couple of defenders for a test drive today... Loved them, apart from I really don't think I could live with the "driving a bus" steering. Would fitting a smaller steering wheel help substantially, or does it still steer like a bus with a smaller tiller?

Si.

From what I've heard, fitting a smaller wheel can make the steering 'feel' a bit more responsive/quick, but I have no experience myself - I like the standard wheels.

Really, you are driving a bus. :D Perhaps the Defender is not for you if you feel you couldn't live with the steering, as there are a lot worse things you have to live with once you buy one!

Hi. I moved to my Defender from a 3 series beamer. It was quite a change. At first, the clutch pedal felt like some sort of weight training machine. Now, I no longer notice it, even when stuck in a crawling traffic jam.

My point is, you will get used to it and you will like it. :)
Now stop being such a puff :D

Got to agree, going from a fairly new Golf GTI to a 2000 TD5 pickup took a little getting used to. I wouldn't change it for anything now though !!

Never had the standard size steering wheel on mine so i cant comment on that but the smaller one i've got seems to give a "relatively responsive" feel and not too bus like at all.

I got a ickle un on my defender. It makes it a more comfortable drive and the swelling on the elbow does eventually begin to subside.:p

If it's the steering that's mainly an issue I would recommend checking the bushes and dampers etc. fitting new ones will make a world of difference.

I would say that driving a land rover is a different experience to a car, I personally love it!
