Right I have all my hinges soaking in a strong solution of caustic soda. I will then put them in a bath to strip all the rust off, I will then be left with front and rear door hinges (back hinges stripped in half) in rust free metal.

Has anyone ever managed to paint their hinges and have them stay rust free?

I have two TD5 NS hinges and I am tempted to use them and try and source another set of TD5 OS hinges as the proper ones have nylon washers and are coated with cadmium or something.

Does anyone have some OS TD5 hinges I could buy? Or a technique to stop the old ones rusting.

Thanks

Yes thats where I got my hinges and they are the business. Just waiting for the weather to turn and I'll get them fitted. They can also supply the captive nuts and new torx bolts if you need them for a few pennies more.

Easier to just buy new.. but i've had success with other metal bits by putting them in a bath of phosphoric acid, let it remove and convert the rust, then zinc rich primer and enamel topcoat.

Well I have OS hinges on the way, I will prep the NS TD5 hinges I already have and the back hinges are stripped and sitting in the fire just now after the extreme caustic solution didn't work. I have new pins and balls for them in my tool-chest I think.
