Hey, I'm new to the forums, I live in cumbria and at the moment I am on a Mechanical Design Apprenteship course.
I am planning on getting a landrover defender 90 next year, when I am 20 with 3 years driving experience as well as a more secure job at sellefeild ltd with £200+ pw income. (each year increasing around £100+ more a week)
I have long since been a fan of defenders ever since going in my uncles defender on the farm, I enjoy tri-roads with my friends landrover knock off suzuki's (jimny, swift and now a blitz) and greenlaning but would like my own 4x4 to do so, and to me there is no better car then an iconic defender. (although my friend dissagrees )
The car I'm looking for is a Landrover defender 90 sw with a 300tdi engine and bull bar, pre 1990's around £6500 over 3 year finance.
I dont know much on the different defender engines, whats the difference between a standard defender engine and the 200tdi and 300tdi?
are there any good Landrover insurers for young adults?
and when I have been looking at inurance, some class a defender 90 station wagon as a car and others a van, whats the difference between car and van insurance? and why is it sometimes considered a van?
I only want the defender for of roading and comuting, there is no buisness use, just a dream car.
Any other hints and advice would be helpfull

Commuting is business use.
I was told a Defender SW with <3 seats is a van and >3 seats is a car.
But most SW start off life with the latter (although if you're buying old it may have developed a new personality)
I initially thought I'd do more off road. But it spends too much time in the garage getting fixed and I don't really rag it around. Any off road I do will be on the assumption it's not going to damage my beauty.
It is for me a dream car also.
You could get a very decent pre 90s for that price. But I'd look at 300tdi or a TD5. Both very good engines.

I dont know what the difference between all these different engines are, I still remember the buick V8 being used in landies (my uncle has a 60's or 70's eddition, all orrigional parts) the defender 90 i looked at had 6 seats but was under van insurance with is 6 digit licence plate.
Can you exlpain the difference between all the engines? all i know is that the 300tdi was used in the wolf as it was esier to work on in the battle feild.

There's a long running poll of which engine is best, I'd look at insurance price difference between 300's and td5's. Mines with Adrian Flux but there's various to choose from but they will want to know about any modifications you do

I have heard a bit of this adrian flux, it seams to be a very good insurance company, and im more than happy to tell them about any modifications expetialy if i can get a quote for how much it will put up insurance if i get the modification so i dont have to fit it and not afford it.

Flux tend not to increase the premium depending on what it is. Nip over to the sponsor forum and drop them a message, from memory you get a discount for being a forum member

Most of my modifications i am wanting, as you saw in the other post, are cosmetic more than hardwiring and engineering modifications. other than the alternator, batteries, A bar and smash guard

I got a good deal on my 300tdi 90 with Aviva as it was a van back (no side windows in back) and I'm only 18 so they may be worth a look at for you.

So Adrian flux and aviva are what to look for, and I suppose I could get seat heating or mound radiators under the back seats

Commuting is not business use, or at least not on any of the insurance I have had, you get sdpc (social domestic pleasure and Commuting) and then spdb (social pleasure domestic and business) buisness use is if you work using your landy or car during the work day, for example delivery or mobile valeting etc
