Looking for some side steps for a Defender that fold under into the recess under the seat box.

I have rock sliders fitted and while they act as a step for me, my small girlfriend and other family members struggle to get in and out without me getting some fold out steps from the kitchen!

Got no interest in the folding ones that fold up and are on the outside as they would get ripped off when laning etc and look generally terrible. Is there anything that folds under?

Also have no interest in fitting anything else other than rock sliders, don't want those silly step/sliders that off almost no protection.

Thanks.

I haven't lost my side steps yet.. and quite like the fact I have to be more careful to avoid losing them. They are also classic Defender.
What recess do you think they will be folding into ? For a step to work its going to be under the floor... It will hang down hence you will lose it faster than a normal step (that's why they fold up). Its not the step which ever gets ripped off on a normal step its the bracket underneath.

You could have a step in a different place but then you couldn't use it as a step.

Good? Main thing is they wont fit properly with the rock sliders and folded up they would make the sliders pointless.

I've side steps and rock sliders on mine and the only time I've had trouble laning was when a mate forgot to put the step up on his side.

Anything you fit would have to get around a slider which would mean you would lose it when going over anything more than a sleeping policeman, How will you retract this beast ? hands and knees and pull it out ?
It seems that sliders are you problem and more thought went into the original steps (although admittedly less into the flaming bracket :) ) than how to get in with sliders.

I fear that's what you will end up with :)

That doesnt look too bad tbh...

It's not that often that I have to carry other folk that find it hard to get in, having the steps would just make things easier.

Ideally would have to just reach under and pull the steps out,

:eek::D I could try!

Isnt far off what I use now!

Just find it supprising that nothing like what im after seems to exist.
I just find it surprising you still persist.
  • Original steps work
  • Original steps with sliders work
  • You can use the sliders to step on as most do
  • What you suggest would catch off-roading and be impossible to get out without getting covered in crap (oh and the mrs has to wait for you to come around to her side)
What more do you want ? From the sounds of it a moan....

  • Don't like the look of the external folding steps, never have
  • Not really no. They fold up externally over the sliders, so if the sliders hit say a tree bye bye step
  • I use the sliders with no issue as the majority of people that get in. However my grandma is 78 and I often have to drive her around, equally my mother has two damaged knees and a bad pelvis which make lifting your legs that high to get in a problem. Thus having to use the kitchen steps to get them in.
  • They would not catch off roading as the step would be tucked underneath completely out of the way. As far as I can tell the regular fold out steps have a support bar which is fitted to the chassis, if that doesnt cause a problem neither would this.
Wranglers, Ford Raptors, F150 etc... All have hidden, internal or other types of folding steps, thats why I find it surprising there is nothing for Defenders. It's easy enough to reach under and pull out a step, bit of thought and a release mech could be thought up.

That is bloody perfect I think. Thank you very much.

Did search around but wasn't exactly sure what I was searching for.

When I originally made my steps/rock/treesliders I considered welding a chain on the slider, towards the front and rear of the door, and putting some stiff hose over it to keep it solid looking on the step part. Just a thought. ;)
