Did it all bolt together easily or was fettling required?

using the disco auto crossmember required a couple of little cutouts in the sideplates to clear a couple of bolt heads in the 90 chassis . the auto cooler pipes were cut off just before front crossmember to connect hoses that go to cooler on top of crossmember in front of rad . The disco rad needs the extending brackets cut off lower pins . The engine oil cooler pipes connect without modification to rad . as do all the hoses for rad and intercooler.
The auto selector bolts up to ali plate in centre seat position . HTSH

I have just bought a defender 90 1989 that has been converted to an automatic. I’m looking for a cheaper alternative to the NAS centre console? Has anyone got any ideas. Thanks Mike

Make up a custom centre cubby box out of mdf and cover in vinyl. Needs to be a little longer than standard to fit the auto gear lever in. Extend the transfer lever so it comes up in front of the main stick.

When you say you want a cheaper alternative to the NAS console, is that cheaper than the genuine item or the aftermarket copy sold by Ashcroft?

I carried out a 300TDi auto conversion using an Ashcroft kit about 3-years ago and documented it on here (photos are now gone as they were hosted by Photobucket) but have attached a photo of the Ashcroft console below.

Ok. Site is playing up tonight, unable to upload photos and double posting.
Will try an post some photos tomorrow evening.

@Nastynick74@Spikal247

I put the auto gear selector and console on the side of the tunnel between the handbrake and the diff lock, fits and looks ok, and I get to keep my lockable metal cubby box. Also more ergonomic than on the centre seat box where many go and less hassle and cost than an NAS console (which personally I don't care for that much).

As above can't upload pics , will also try later.

Always thought that would be a decent place for it. Probably ideal would be a yankee-style column change if you could make it work.

Blooming forum glitches! :mad:
The other option I've seen is placing the shifter on the top of the tunnel between the diff lock and battery cover, but it has to be raised to fit the shifter housing and might interfere with the diff lock lever.
Pity can't do images at present.

im just in the middle of an auto conversion....that looks like a good place for the shifter :)

Finally managed to upload photos of my console (Ashcroft version), neat & tidy and works very well.
Had an Exmoor Trim security cubbybox which I loved but decided that the console would be the better (& neater) option for me.
Had to extend the Hi/Low/Lock lever a couple of inches as it was buried down in the gaiter but that was easy enough to do.

Hmmm, looks a lot more professional and factory fit than mine.....:rolleyes: Very nice.

@Litch - the pedal guard, did you have to mod it for the auto? I still have the LT77 tunnel but a slight mod - bulge - on the drivers side near the handbrake to accommodate the autobox; wondering if the guard would fold down flat. Cheers.

litch whats the access panel for in the side of your battery box? is it just to make battery access easier or what?

@Litch, another question please...
Does the larger auto brake pedal make a difference? I've still got the standard square brake pedal, works ok but wonder if the bigger footprint helps.
