Been round Land Rovers for rather longer than I would care to say, and last week took delivery of a new Defender 90.
Love it, EXCEPT there is a very strange metallic noise which appears to come from the floor/bulkhead behind the seats.
If I didn't know, I would have said that there was a metal socket or half a dozen ball bearings rolling around on the floor or in the bulkhead, or a piece of chain under the car wrapped round something which periodically bangs against the floor.
It doesn't happen a the time, nor does it happen particularly when going over bumps. It isn't stones or gravel either. Its exactly the same noise every time.
Have taken the jack etc out and packed everything in bubble wrap, but this has made no difference.
Have checked under the driver's seat, nothing loose there either.
Nothing appears amiss under the vehicle.
Thought about trying to record it, but as I never know when it will happen somewhat difficult.
Anyone got any ideas?
 
When you say that you have got new Fender, does that mean new new or new to you?

Do you only get the noise when you are driving or does it happen when you are stopped?

Have you checked that there is no back/forward play on the hand brake drum?
 
I mean brand spanking new hot off the production line, which makes it more puzzling!
Noise only occurs when driving.
Not at regular intervals either.
Have heard reports previously of disgruntled workers hanging nuts by fishing thread inside colums, but..............????

Back to the dealer - let them investigate. You start undoing things you are going to run into warranty issues. :)
 
Try the handbrake cable.
Mine was rattling and knocking intermittently after I fitted x eng disc conversion.
Took me ages to figure out what it was.
But soon sorted with a cable tie. :D

The jack on my 2010 is laid the battery box along side the battery as is the wheel brace etc worth a quick check perhaps

I also had a metallic banging type noise so i threw the wife's kraftwerk cd out of the window and the vile noise stopped ;)

Been in touch, and they have suggested I call out Land Rover Assistance!

Assistance will come out drive it round for 10 mins and tell to take it to your local dealer bet you a pound to penny.

...or they will take it there for you. They have the same problems re warranty.
Quicker and easier to just call in with it.
 
Never been in one newer than my 88 but is the jack still kept behind the seat? Maybe its not strapped back and is banging?
The jack and associated bits is in the box under the passenger seat. The jack was strapped in tightly. However, took everything out, and wrapped it all in bubble wrap, just in case, and put it all back Still the same problem.
Checked under the drivers seat too, nothing of note there to cause any concern.
 
Well, nothing to account for the noise could be found, but after an almighty din which sounded like huge ball bearings inside the bulkhead, the noise (fingers crossed) appears to have stopped! How bizarre is that?

I must confess that each time I turn the key I half expect to hear it.
The very first time I actually thought one of the LR production people had left a socket on the floor behind the seat. It sounded just like one rolling from one side to the other.
