Hi,

anyone know what sort of job it is to replace the turbo center cartridge (the bit where the fins/bearings are)

Ive never done one, but bet you pound to a penny all the bolts will be seized and shear off, but if the cartridge is cheap enough got to be worth a go?

Like he says^^^^, all the fixings will likely be rusted solid. And the cartridge might start wobbling about and eat the turbo.
Interesting job, though, let us know how you get on.
 
I've done this job once before make sure you spray all the nuts for a few days before attacking it. Apart from that its fairly easy Mine has done 10k with no issues.
 
I changed mine last year. Buy one from a reputable firm, no chinese crap. I bought it from www.turbo-rebuild.co.uk. it's a Mellett (not sure if I spelt it correctly), which is the original manufacturer.

Very straightforward swap however I did have to heat the bolts up with an oxy-acetylene torch. They are only accessible with an open-jaw spanner hence very easy to round off unless you heat them well.

Did mine last year and was lucky with no seized or broken bolts,fairly straightforward.ijust had to buy a bigger pair of circlip pliers as there’s a big old clip that holds the cartridge in.i also bought British manufactured,it was a bit more money but trying to buy British when possible.this is the old one.FUBAR does not cover it!
 
Thanks for the replys, will have another look at mine, it's got a little play up and down, possibly 2 or 3mm but it has been sat off the engine for a while so there is no oil in there to possibly take some of the play out ??? I'm guessing. Part of an engine refurb so wanted to change for piece of mind but not too sure if it actually needs replacing.

I would just go ahead and replace it especially if, as you said, it has a little play and has been sat off the engine for a while. It's not expensive and neither is it difficult to replace.

Done mine last weekend not a hard job just make sure you have circlip plyers big enough to for the job and watch out for bolts snapping I had to re drill and tap one if the botls on the exhaus manifold side
