Hi I’m new to this site but need help with my 2000 defender td5. It’s been running rough from start up and unless you start it and leave it for 10 minutes to warm up it’s impossible to drive! It ‘chugs’ while puffing our white smoke with no power and not getting over like 10 mph. It can often stall aswell. After driving it will all of a sudden just blow through and go back to normal! Any advice would be appreciated!
Also when it is running properly it hits a lag point at about 2000 revs in all the gears which limits it to about 65mph. Again any advice welcome! Thanks

Is your coolant level going down?

Yes but it’s hit and miss! Can take a few days to go down then it could take a few weeks! It’s not the same every time
I'm afraid you are probably looking at a blown cylinder head gasket. :(

always worth doing a fuelpump purge before starting incase your injector seals are going. Mine did something similar when the injector seals were shot

Is there any signs of a diesel leak, especially from the fuel pressure regulator. But the coolant loss and poor running on start up sounds like you have a head gasket problem or a crack in the cylinder head that takes up as it gets hot and when it cools lets water into the bores or one of them.
