Hi, in my defender its quite difficult to change gears early morning, or anytime i start to use in after long time interval (roughly 20hrs or more). It makes a grating sound when entering from 1st to 2nd gear and from 2nd to 3rd.

After abt 1-1.5 kms or few gear changes(abt 10) its completely gone and works smooth

is it a common thing in these vehicles?

its a 2.5 n/a with LT77

thanks

When was the last time you changed the oil in the gearbox. Remember it uses ATF not EP90.

i ve no idea since i got it recently. But i guess it is filled with the local gear oil we find here. would it have harmed the gearbox?
most likely not to be ATF.

Speaking to the previous owner he seems to have replaced the engine and gearbox 1 and half years ago. No GB oil changes since. so its been running without ATF since then. Is that bad news?

Whats in the box is called some "90" thing. Its a oil intended for gearboxes and thats what they put here. Its not ATf though, it is definitely not engine oil..

I bet it wouldnt have hurt it much would it?

EP90....it is far to 'heavy' an oil for the main gearbox. Change it for ATF asap. It will cause harm to the box if not changed.

thanks mate. i will definitely.
its been there for roughly 18000miles..

i guess there will be consequences?

The Transfer box takes EP80/90.
As you're in Sri Lanka I'd hazard a guess that the warmth there has kept the oil in the gearbox quite fluid, so you might be ok.
Change it ASAP for ATF and see how it goes.

Yeah hope so.
Its quite a difficult country to maintain a Landy, costs... rare spares, lack of knowledge etc..
