Hi, I have a defender 90 (station wagon I think. It has sliding side windows in the rear).

It has side facing seats (or at least it has the folding metal frames for the seats - no padding on either seat or backrest) and before I get them restored/replaced I was uncertain if I could ever use them for passengers on the road legally? There doesnt appear to be any seat belts.

Thanks in advance.

What year is it? Generally yes its legal except some later ones (cant remember the year the law changed). You have no seatbelts on side facing seats either.

IIRC, if it was fitted with inward facing seats, its fine, if it was fitted with forward facing seats from the factory, its not.
also, IIRC, if there are no seatbelts there, you are fine, its only if seatbelts are provided that you need to use them

Thanks guys (it's a 'k'reg 1993 with, I believe, factory fitted inward facing side seats. Does anyone do simple conversions from inward to forward facing?

yep, a few companies to bolt in forward facers, exmoor trim for one, they aint cheap compared with the benches though. and you loose seating, you can only get 2 in.
other options are minibus seats, have a search on here, a few have done it.

I too have a 1993 defender 90 and have been informed that seat belts have to be fitted.

I need 2 folding rear seats, if anyone is off loading

Yes they are completely illegal. Land Rover was run by complete and utter morons, so they decided they wouldn't sell legal vehicles in the UK. At least their hope was that just as dumb people might buy them and use them on the public roads to then be prosecuted :eek: Truly shocking scandal. So much so it could be unbelievable.
