yeh,somthing like that:D while were on the subject a decent place to get work done,spares,advice,etc is GUM TREE 4X4,their based on ditchling common.great service,good advice,great bunch of guys,they also break L/Rs and have loads of bits and pieces.
 
It seems worth a look, if it's not too far away.
If it's solid, drives well and you can get it for £3500, it could be a good buy.

So I can solve the hill-climbing ability in an afternoon with a tin of Dulux? ;)

Did none of them come out of Solihull with industrial non-slip flooring stuck to the body then?!:)

Right, spent a while down at the thatched place on the A22. I had a good look underneath enough of them to now understand what outriggers, cross members and rotten holes look like!

I took an old 2.5 NA diesel out, and am not sure I could live with it;) It took ages to get up to 30mph, and the gear selection was a nightmare! I also drove a TDi, which I got on much better with. Not super quick, not that I ever expected Defender ownership to be, but better than I was expecting it to be. Would be perfect for driving around the lanes around here! The gears were also much better than the bowl of porridge in the previous one.

So it was a good trip, considering I know I need at least a TDi! They did say I would need to spend a lot more than 4k to get into a TDi, but that assumes I am buying at their prices...

The search continues!
 
mate, get a 300tdi, best allrounder!good towing, good acceleration, fine cruisin at 60-65, good gearbox, if ur a mechanic, easy to work on, if not a mechanic cheaper that td5 to be worked on. go for it!

Is there a big difference between the 200 and the 300? I know this is a big debate on the forums, but is that because there were genuine improvements in the 300, or is it because people who own a 200 prefer them?:)
 
300 is more refined engine than 200 by all accounts. generally its either the 200 or 300, no one but the rich boys like th td5 and before the 200, its jus too damn slugglish and rough round the edges!either get a good 200 or a good 300.
 
basically the 300 makes the defender more like a car to drive than the 200. a couple hundred modifications on the 200, so if ur lookin to use it on't road a bit more then defo the 300. PLUS the 200 is more servicable (less electrics) than 300, but sayin that the 300 is still self servicable pretty much.
 
So I'll aim for a 300 TDi. However, if I find a 200TDi in a Landy with perfect chassis and body work, for a good price, I'll slap down the deposit! Sound like the right plan?!
 
damn good chassis, bulkhead. very little IF ANY crunchin in gears, ya may get a lil between 1st n 2nd. make sure difflock and high/low gets in with a lil effort (they are ALWAYS stiff as a vicar in a playground). millege aint an issue. try n find out what its been used for i.e on road/off road/ towing.
mines got 160k on't clock on a P reg but its pretty much only bin used as a car (although it HAS had its fair few problems!)check normal enginey things, look for signs of gasket issues, timing belt changes (theres ur service history for that) ermmm anything else is common sence. I was lookin to pay no more than 5k for a 90, but ended up payin 7k for a very tidy one. (aboot a grand too much i know!!) I was in ur position, dint no very much bout wat engines, wat to look for. but ya get there in't end!
 
Pretty much what I figured. My mind keeps telling me to spend a bit more, get something a bit newer and have less problems, but I suppose it doesn't always work that way!

I was originally going to get an old cheap (c. 2k) Disco, and run it for a couple of years before it rotted into the ground. Then I decided it was not cost effective, and spending double would get me something that would basically last forever if I look after it. I didn't want to spend too much though because it is a second car for me, so wanted to keep it budget!
