weather's been awful so havent had a chance to jack it up but it came from the family farm and im pretty certain the lock hasnt been used for a fairly long time so may try driving around whilst trying to engage it then testing it. i've got a decent idea of where this linkage should be from the forum linked, looks to me like it is on the driver's side of the gearbox just behind where the front propshaft flange is?
Yes.
(Where abouts in wilts are you?)

Position you have is correct. I removed the floor plate when I had an issue with mine.

Crawled underneath just now and established the linkage is there, I can push the selector by hand, and I hear an audible click and the light comes on so I had someone move the lever whilst watching the linkage and the bushes that it pivots on have so much play that it just moves the whole linkage and doesn’t pivot meaning it can’t move the selector. Anyone know where I can get said bushes if they are available?

Syncro Gearboxes uk or Ashcroft transmissions should have the parts you need.
It is possible to turn the shaft that goes into the front housing with a spanner to test if lock itself works [ 10mm if I remember.] Issue I had was the short cam arm on to the shaft had worn and although it was moving did not turn the shaft.
