Looked at a high mileage (170,000),Landy yesterday which though is a little ropey is mechanically sound and has no rot(maybe a little on the top of bulkhead). Are there any obvious pitfalls of buying a high mileage 200tdi and is it worth the asking price of just over £6000..

6000 ????
I would assume a lez complient csw for 6k...or your outside the uk.

If its worth 6k with a bulkhead needing work then i need to be selling mine. Must be worth 8k.

bulkhead is in pretty good nick, would only be a minor repair from what i could see.it started out life as a van but now has rear seats and windows, havent a clue if its LEZ compliant.

Mechanically sound and no rot sounds mint, not ropey, but saying that I'd keep looking, maybe a little further afield. Sounds a bit like the kind of thing you could get for around 3000. Have you had the wheels up and checked the drivetrain?

It's had a new driveshaft and a galvanised chassis, doors are solid, just needs a respray really to look tidy.....I am still thinking its a lot of money for what it is but then I know very little about Landys.

The galvanised chassis will bump it up quite a bit, but still sounds a little high, guess it depends what you class as ropey.. pictures would help.
Rebuilds cost a lot of money if done thoroughly, you don't necessarily get out what you put in, but obviously people do want as much back out as they can. I'm slightly worried about putting mine up come to think of it.

If it started life as a van then it is a mongrel and wont be LEZ compliant (so cant realistically be used for London trips) and therefore should be priced as a modified van and not a CSW if that is how its 'disguised' at the moment.

What year is it? Is it a purpose built 200 tdi or conversion. I can't help feeling the price is a bit on the high side if its a bit ropy and needs a respray. I have no idea what mileage mine has done, must be something like that and its still going strong. I recently changed the engine valve seals which was a fairly easy job to do. I'm taking mine off on another trip to Morocco in the spring. Its done several. Engine is the least of my worries.

Cheers for the info..was really looking for a 300tdi but this one came up and is tempting if I could get the price down a bit.I know the 200 tdi engine is bomb proof but realistically how many miles are they capable of before its time to change. Also how easy is it to come by a 200tdi disco engine.

I purchased a 110 300tdi csw last weekend. Although mine is ropey, id been after one for a while, so have been watching prices.

In general (from my observation) -

110s are a little more expensive than 90s
300s are a fair amount more than 200s
CSWs are considerably more money (across the range) than vans, converted vans, etc.

(and it has to say in the log book - else its just a converted van, no matter how smart or otherwise)

My feeling is that, for £6k, you could buy a ropey 90, pay someone else to put a brand new chassis on it, and still have some money left over...

It depends. Mine is an original CSW (the VIN agrees with this) and is classed somewhat ambiguously as a 'light 4x4 utility' rather than 'estate car' or whatever. LEZ checker confirms that it's exempt from the LEZ restriction. The 7th letter of the VIN should be a B for a 90 or M for a 110 if it's a CSW.

mine is or was an 1993 SV90[still reg as such] rebuilt to county spec ,galv chassis,68,000 miles £7500.
The extra 100k could knock 5000 off that.
Plant might be bulletproof, but the rest might be on its last legs.
Galv chassis will only last as long as it doesn't take a scratch and let the rot in underneath.
Without seeing it I suspect it's a bit steep.
Saying that, "ropey" could mean a lot of things, and honestly, with the number of fenders going missing, I'd rather have it looking scruffy and unattractive.

If it helps, I bought my '94 200tdi, 130k for £3,000, bulkhead rotten at the top, needed new chassis and any place you'd expect to find rot then it was there, though fantastic engine and mechanically sound. I learnt that the initial outlay isn't where the money goes, it's the new swivel, alternator, wiper motor, chassis, bulkhead repair, the list goes on for us all. If you spend 6k then budget to spend another 5k, now look what 11 will get you.

.... having said that, with the exception of replacing the alpine window seals, I've loved every moment of sorting mine out.

Galv chassis alone has got to be 1800 quid?
Assuming if its got a new chassis good chance all new brake pipes and possible suspension fitted?
200 and 300 will do 300k with no worries.
200 is rougher sounding engine than 300.
If its got some toys. ie nice wheels/tyres or a winch might be worth the money, but if its a boggo 90 then it sounds overpriced.

Ive been toying with the idea of selling mine, but keep thinking they are only going to go up in value.
I had it on ebay a couple of weeks ago, 1150 views, Im not sure if I even cared if it didnt sell?
My yearly costs are as follows
mot 30 quid
tax 225 quid
Insurance 130 quid
I hardly use it so theres no real running costs as such, last year maybe did 200 miles.
So thats just under 400 quid per year or 8 pounds per week, I kind of think its never going to go down in value and is certainly going to go up at least 400 quid per year

Mine certainly provides more than 8 pounds worth of smiles per week.....

Just been out in mine in the woods down the road in the rain for a laugh.
