Hi all,

The clutch went very hard on my '97 Defender 300 TDi a couple of weeks ago and couldn't be engaged. This happened in the space of a minute or so. The recovery driver said it appears to be a slave cylinder that has gone.

I took it to my usual garage where it has sat for a week. I phoned the mechanic who agrees it appears to be the slave cylinder and thinks the engine needs to come out in ordder for the replacement to be made.

I'm not sure this is required - does anyone know for certain whether I am going to end up paying for unnecessary work, if I take his advice and proceed with the repair?

No, the engine doesn't need to come out to change the slave cylinder. Without looking at it I wouldn't like to guess what is wrong, but it doesn't sound like the slave cylinder to me. Where abouts are you?

Thanks for the reply - I live in Surrey. What does it sound like do you reckon?

going hard would seem like the pivot has worn through the release lever ,which would require either the engine or gear box removing
