hi there i am looking to buy a second hand defender 110 and was wondering what year would be best with a budget of £8000 many thanks

Condition and past historys the more vital thing its no use buying a motor thats 2 years younger if its a dog.Take someone along that knows what to look for then theres less chance of buying that dog.Add where you live to your profile and you never know someone on here just might offer to have a look at a motor you have your eye on.

thanks for the info i am a mechanic
i was just wanting to know any info of what to avoid
any dodgy years
any helpful hits of things to look out for
any info really

ringers/clones check gear box an axle numbers an year of manufacture behind the driver an passenger front wheels on the chassis...... remember if you think its to good to be true it probably is don't by a lemon:D

Being a mechanic I would suggest a late Defender 110 300tdi County Station Wagon (CSW) 1994-1998.... very easy for you to work on and a good reliable engine. No computers to worry about...... expect to pay around 5 to 6k for a good later model with average mile of 10k per year in a private sale..... add another £1500 from a dealer?
The Td5 came in 1998..... I have never driven or worked on one so will leave that to someone else to comment on/recommend.
Leaves you a few bob to play with getting it right....... mine just has 6 seats front and centre row.... more storage in back and cheaper insurance (less people to injure). Always run the vehicle through insurance quote before you buy. Mine is an ex BT 'special vehicle'....... one data base (Saga... yes I am an old fooker) had it recorded as a comercial so that could have meant a high insurance quote. Another gave me a good quote as they had insured it before and new all about it. (sureterm)

Take your time on buying.... took me 4 months to find mine and I paid just under 5k with 114k on the clock and FULL service history 1997 300tdi CSW

Try an avoid early TD5s, as these are known to be quite bad in terms of reliability. There are some very nice late 300tdis on ebay and autotrader at the moment.

thanks for the info
still if any one else has some helpful hits would be most greatful
any and all info welcome
