My 110 CSW will only move with the diff lock on and following the advice given in other threads regarding broken half shafts I am now looking at the possibility of either a striped Crown wheel or stripped diff.gears. I have the filler plug out and can see that the diff is not turning when either wheel is turned having jacked up one side at a time.Am I on the right track? Can I do a repair with having to buy any special tools? Are there any locking pins or suchlike that may have come adrift? I can't hear any odd noises from the front end when driving with the diff lock on so am I nuts to start stripping the crown wheel out in a yard full of ice and mud? I don't have a workshop

if you run vehicle in gear carefully without diff lock look to see which prop is spinning that will be axle with problem ,if it is front end you will have to remove cvs and shafts to remove diff ,to check cvs turn wheel hard in lock and listen for knocks as you spin wheel, if it is diff more likely the diff gears and shaft rather than crown wheel and pinion ,turn diff housing so these can be seen

same as above post - if within the diff it will be the crosspin that has broken. Only "special" tool needed is the box socket or normal socket for the hub nut removal

Thanks for that James,I can see the front prop turning to its that end thats gone wallop. Would a busted cv cause the symptoms?

Again thanks for your help bmp,is that pin behind the crown wheel inside the casing? Do i have to strip everything out to change it? I'm bloody freezing so I will prolly best start again in the morning, getting too old for lying under vehicles but some of us never learn :p

yes diff has to be out to do it, but every one that i have come to replace here has also damaged the carrier when it has broken.
With one wheel on the ground the diff isn't rotating - then same on the other side - so it is pointing to diff failure
