Hi guys

My ex mod defender 110 (300 engine) started making a clattering noise and lost power steering, pulled over and the belt has slipped off (not broken) and there is blue I assume coolant ****ing out everywhere. Just waiting to be recovered but any thoughts on what happened?
 
I’d guess water pump too. Although the belt passes fairly close to a coolant hose at the top so it could have ridden up and worked it’s way through that. Or you cooked it because the belt came off and stopped driving the water pump.....
 
With the belt off check all the pulley for security and giv then a wiggle to see if any bearings have gone. Alternator and pas pump can make a right racket when they go for a burton

Only just replaced the alternator last week! Thanks will check

I’m pretty sure the belt came off only about 1 min before it conked but can’t be sure
 
It doesn’t take very long to overheat if the engine is already hot. My alternator seized and stalled the engine :eek: so I popped the belt off to move off the road and after 100 -200 yards the temperature had shot up.
Anyway, hope your issue isn’t too serious. Let us know what you find.
 
+1 mine did the same and we ended up stuck in the tunnels under mount blanc... Due to ****ty dash illumination I hadn't seen the temp rise but did notice the annoying squeal had stopped :mad:... Even when letting to cool fully I ended up only making a hundred metres before it went into the red. Admittedly it was on hills.

I suspect you didn't tension it correctly and it came off.. don't worry about the coolant you will be unlikely to have damaged it.
 
Is your belt intact? Is it possible that part of the belt has got sucked through the crank oil seal and made the timing belt jump a couple of teeth?
Could be worth checking your timing, I had this happen on a car engine once.
 
just closing this one off and thanking everyone for comments. it was as many people guessed a water pump issue - seized so replaced. Belt was reusable :)
