I tried changing a rear indicator bulb only to find it was all corroded up. On changing the bulb i only got fast flashing on the front left when testing it worked, the entire indicator system then stopped working.... On trying to find the fuse , i checked the fuse panel and there is no reference. My Haynes manual was useless and had no reference. Can anyone tell me where the indicator fuse is and what size it is. I changed half a dozen 10amp red fuses on what i think were lights etc but no joy. Why do they not mention the indicator fuse or put a pic or reference to it on the fuse cover panel or mention what fuse is what in the Haynes manual?
Please help me as i have no indicators at all and i cant detect a click on the relay either when i move the indicator arm left or right.
I have new rear orange indic lights ordered and a new flasher unit but delivery might be weeks away yet.
Anyone know where the fuse is and what number and its rating?
The Haynes manual says there are two fuse boxes, one above the gearchange under the dash and one under the drivers seat. Is this right?
 
Fuse 21 according to my fuse box which will be bottom row of fuses in front of gearstick forth from right

See my version which is very different and this is why i couldnt locate the indicator fuse as the two left arrow one in your pic isnt on mine.

My nearside rear indicator light was that bad when i removed it and it was totally caked in mud behind it. When i waggled the wires after removoving the plastic light unit i pushed out inches of caked dirt onto the rear wheel. It shows how badly treated these lights are. I then dried out the light unit with kitchen roll inside and cleaned it off outside. I then tried to clean the inside terminal part where the bulb sits as well as it was real grubby and crusted with rot and had rusty pickups. The bulb was all encrusted and gone green/blue with mould etc. I then added a brand new bulb which worked when it was wobbled about but only now and again. At this point i had decided to get two new ones from Bearmach. But,,,,,, the other from and side flashing lights then stopped suddenly. Hence my thinking a fuse or flasher unit has popped/gone. SO i removed the fuse cover , changed all the bottom row of red 10a ones as they looked as if they did the lights and got nowhere..... I then screwed the rear NS light back on and gave up for the day. New lights coming by post for the 16th and a new flasher unit PRC8876 as well. (4 pin)
Somebody must know which fuse drives the indicators and flasher unit.What is so annoying is the Haynes manual only shows witing of up to 1984 upto 86, 86 to 91, 91 to 96 then nothing at all till it shows 2002 onwards models. No 96 to 2002 at all and mine is a mid 2001.
 
What do you think a 'SOUNDER' is? Could it be the Flasher that normally clicks or the horn? Being an English motor it should say horn surely?
 
I dont have an alarm on it but do have a disabling anti start switch. Did you see what i meant regarding the hopeless diagram from the fuse cover. No mention of the left/right arrows like on yours/
 
The diagram for electrics on the 2002 Defender shows fuse 21 and 31 as being used. 31 in a satellite fusebox and 21 in the passenger area one. Trouble is mine only shows 20 fuses and i have no idea where a satellite fusebox sits,
 
Thanks it all helped. I found out from a guy on Youtube videos in Canada that the fuse i wanted was the one for the hazard lights and the rear wiper/washer. So top row and third from the right. No mention of indicators but the man from Britannica Restorations Ltd knew where to look and which fuse to change. I also changed the indicator / hazard relay and the hazard rocker switch and both rear indicator lights at the same time for a belt and br solution to this. As its a 20 year old vehicle it all helps keep the lights working on it.
 
Hi sorry to jump in. I have a defender 90 1988 I have no indicators either and no hazards. Click jt down nothing any help
 
As a guess it will be the indicator relay that has failed. Its behind the fusebox and is a cheap enough unit to change first after that is checking or changing the fuse . Then it might also be the hazard switch that has failed as well or on its own. Me i renewed the fuses, relay and hazard switch to resolve my problem. The relay should make a clicking noise when the ignition is on and you select left or right on the steering column stalk/switch. If it doesnt then thats your problem.

Hi so where is the indicator relay situated. My fuses are infront of the gear knob. So is the indicator relay behind that ? I’ve checked every fuse in the little panel they are all sound. Unless there’s another fuse box somewhere else. I know the relay for the hazard switch is right next to the button near the door. (1988 defender )

  • If you remove the hazard switch, you can open it up carefully and clean any contacts that look dirty. I replaced one a few years ago and it was no better (new ones can be rubbish) so I opened the original and cleaned it up and it’s still working yet.
