Hi i have a DEF 90 300TDI 1996 , i think i have established that i have the integrated shafts/flanges on the rear , I was hoping to just replace the axle drive flanges and take a bit of slop out of the trans .
Now as i have integrated shafts will it have the same positive effect that flanges do .

Your rear half shafts and drive flanges are a combined item. If you undo the five bolts you will be able to slide the halfshaft out and check the splines for wear. There is a gasket under the flange and you need threadloc for the bolts, so make sure you have these before you unbolt it.
 
There is always slack/slop in the transmission.

Have you checked for wear/play in the diff and is the propshaft in good order as spline wear is often overlooked and of course the UJs take quite a beating.
 
Hi yes props are new , Not checked the diffs properly . The slop is not that bad , props helped loads , but i read that the drive flanges can cause trouble and for the price of (none genuine) flanges i thought worth a try . But as mine are combined its a bit more ££££ just to try .

Are the combined/integrated shafts known to wear like the separate flange type do , its done 115K but guess that does not tell you much , i know it did some towing before i got it and has been used as a shooting bus at some point , other than that i don't know . i don't think its had an overly cruel life going by chassis etc .

Your rear shafts, with the fixed flanges, are just like your front half shafts really. Except, the rear ones just have splines on one end, the end that slots in to the diff gear. The front half shafts have splines on both ends. The end that slots in to the diff gear, same as the back ones. Then there's the splines at the road wheel end, from the CV joint, that go in to the front drive flange. So, all of these splines can wear. It won't cost you money to 'try' these because you can visually inspect them for wear for the cost of a few gaskets (Pence for these) and some threadloc (a few quid).
 
Some people prefer the ones you've got where the flange is forged onto the shaft because there's one less splined joint to wear and create slack. So you've probably got less slack than the rest of us already
