after my clutch fork went the weekend i have been advised that while the gearbox is out to put a new clutch in aswell while its in bits
the landy garage has asked me to seriously consider that i dont do this as its a 2.5td ..but its only got 160k on the clock and it runs as sweet as a nut..he recommends that i should go for the 2ootdi conversion and not thro any more money at the 2.5 ive just put new water pump and rad on it and had it serviced friday..
trouble is it all comes down to the wonga..what is a replacement clutch fitted gonna cost me?
and what will a 200 tdi conversion cost me?..ive seen what looks like a nice complete 200tdi will all pumps rad and intercooler etc for £450 i then need the conversion pipes £170 whats it likely to cost me to get it fitted?

one garage has quoted me £1500 to supply and fit an engine but trouble is i dont have £1500
any help or idea of cost or what others would do in this situation would be good.
at the end of the day it is my play thing and i love it to bits but where do you draw the line on what you spend on it

oddie got his 200TDi supplied and fitted fer a grand.
even got a bling air filter thrown in.

I did my own conversion for about £300.

Land Rover Genuine clutch fitted by Land Rover - £550.
Do it yourself job - a day, some tools, and about £50/60 to do it all.

i like the idea of the 200 tdi as this is defo the way i go if the td went tits up,it just runs so sweet at the mo aprt from the clutch.. whos done the conversion from td to 200 and what was the major benefits?...ta

Why replace your td if it's a good un. Undoubtedly a tdi is way better but if cost is an issue just do the clutch and keep the td.

thats what i reckond but everyone i speak to says do the conversion. i just really dont know what to do here..whats the td engine worth as a runner new rad cost me £220 plus fitting and a new water pump..is there a market for the td or is everyone just junking them

you should get 32 - 35 mpg out of a 200TDi.
do the maths and work out yer payback period.

prob about 30 years.i only use it for playing in or taking the kids out.i have a van and another car aswell..ive seen a few discos that are mot failures that are up for around £500 if i got one of them got the engine out what would i then get scrap for the rest of the motor ?..that might recoup some of my money

about £170/200 depending on what you take off and whether you split the aluminium panels from the steel sections.

if your td is running fine, just have the clutch fitted and run it until it needs to be changed, yes there is a noticable differance between the td and tdi but the extra cost would take a long time to recoup. your old td engine is not worth a great deal as you can pick them up for £100 on ebay or in yellas case for nowt.

sound like that might be the plan.i hate spending dosh i dont have to.but also dont want to spend the dosh on the td and then have summit else bugger up later, guess thats the ultimate decision to make
i spose i have to look at it realistcly that it is a toy,i dont need it for work or shopping so the sensible thing to do would be bung in a new clutch
like you say stig i aint gonna get nothing for the td even if its a good runner,so if i take the chance and it does bugger up i might get a couple of squid for the td engine as scrap but sell the rad and water pump and new alternator seperately

Bottom line is its a Land Rover, you will always be spending money on it.
If you fit a Tdi you will still be spending money on it, fitting a Tdi will not stop that. If your happy with the TD then fit a new clutch, but keep a look out for bargains and stock pile them ready change to a Tdi when the old motor gives up.

just fix yer td, over time just buy bits here and there for your conversion, once yer have it all its only gonna take yer a weekend to do it.

Funnily enough I was talking to our local mechanic today looking at a 90 he'd just put a 200 in - he charged them £600 all in for taking the old un out of a rotted Disco and fitting it into the 90, and was showing me how easy it would be to do my own myself..... I was really surprised at how little there was to change round.
