Righto people, really would appreciate advice on a bit of a dilemma.

this is my 1994 Discovery 1, 3.9 V8 ES. It has done 91,000 miles with a complete service history. Condition wise it is very very good. Very little rust - and what little there was I have sorted. I have spent around £1500 on everything from dinitrol underseal to new window seals, maintenance, sourcing original parts to bring it up to good as possible condition, before we get onto the roof rack/suspension + wheels etc. Its not mint as it has lived a life, but personally haven't seen a cleaner one outside of restorations or a rare one here or there.

The dilemma I have is, that out of good care in the next 18 months/year I would likely want to get the engine a bit of tlc (cam, gaskets, timing chain etc) as well as rebuilt TC, + new exhaust etc to keep the old girl purring as good as possible - worth noting that I would only do this for peace of mind, there is no signs at all of any issues, but as we know these are basically maintenance items on this engines.

This is will cost likely circa 6/7k (rough numbers, still not sure if I will do the work myself for lack of time). That is money that I will almost certainly never get back - and I'm wondering if I'm better off selling now for 4500-5000 while its in perfectly working order with no imminent need of work, and putting that plus 6/7k into getting a 90, which is more likely to maintain/grow in value).

At this point this is a purely logical thought process (emotions are another thing!) The good thing about keeping it is I can stagger the work over the next year or so.

I would be very interested in how others approach this - appreciate I am probably viewing this with a bit too much logic but also aware that Disco 1's are still very much a lower value vehicle, and reality is I don't want to spend money that others won't see the same value in - I could put 4k into over the next couple of years, and in reality only be able to sell it for a bit more.

Can someone help guide my thoughts? :)

Very nice looking Discovery, Green anorl what more could you want.

I would always go with a vehicle you know than one you dont.... "a 90" is where the problem lies.... which 90 ? You may get lucky, you may not.....

Disco is the natural progression from a 90 and will become the new 90/110 soon enough. Its comfier, quieter, and less to insure..

Not sure where your 6-7k estimate comes from ?, seems steep for what you stated.

In 10 years time it will be heritage....

That's helpful, thanks mate. Insurance is a great point.

6-7k a rough number I've attached to the amount of work (including labour) that I'd want done to get it where I want it to be.

Fully engine out rebuild - would have to budget on at least 4k. (budgetting off turners but there might be better options? - shame RPI are no more )
Ashcroft TC - £600
would also go allisport rad - 1200
Plus - exhaust etc and likely a transmission refresh of sorts.
probably wouldn't end up being much short of that number in my mind.

Have RPI fully closed then?
I see they had down sized but a few motors were out side when I drove past about 8 months ago

in terms of rebuild work yes - they're slowly selling off their pretty massive stock items but not taking on any garage work from what I understand.

Take all the financials out of it because what ever you put in you most likely wont get back ever, even if they do appreciate, so do you love it and want to keep it forever? If so, keep it, do what’s required and never get rid of it. Not sure if you want to keep it forever? Sell it, get something else but be careful as you may regret it.

Personally I’d keep it and never get rid of it; looks good!
