My Saab is on its last legs, I cant be throwing money at it, also a bigger family means I need pram space etc.
So, I'm thinking Disco one or two.
Can good ones still be found? What kind of money do decent ones fetch? I need Chelsea tractor, leather and toys before I would ever consider one.
Any thoughts?

Mine was 1200 quid. Runs great, had a years ticket, and passed again, interior would be too tatty for townie use. Seen cleanish ones under a couple of K.
Diesls tend to be more.

My TD5 with a years mot , ES spec was £850.

There are bargains to be had.

You fixed it yet? Lol ..........still £850 is quite a bargain my mate spent about 4K on similar and then some more fixing his ......you can do a lot of fixing for three grand :)

What are the3 TD5's like in general? Would it be better to look for a decent 300?

Had mine 9 years love it, it has its faults like any car but parts are quiet cheap not bad to work on.
Try and find a facelift model 2002 onwards
a well looked after one from new that is, i would expect to do around 300,000 miles
29 mpg if your carefull
Do watch out for rotten chassis tends to be back half

Paid £1800 for my td5, ES and only 80000 miles when i got it. It is a Cat d but was a good way to get what otherwise would have been quite a bit more. If your not fussed about resale then consider one.

i gave £4200 for mine 3yr ago, history and 1 owner, hasn't cost me much, been reliable for what i use it for, totally sound, thats the main thing, you get what you pay for, but look, then look again, i couldn't tell you if any around here are worth a look as your location is your Arse!!! maybe a better more precise location might help! Good luck

Well my 300 owning friend cannot keep up with me, and mine just seems to be a mass of torque.

TD5 is the best Diesel engine Land Rover designed and the best factory fitted Diesel fitted to a Defender

Someone said parts arent a bad price. 400 quid for a front shaft, seriously! Unless you take a gamble with chinese soft cheese metal at 150 quid. Ignoition barrel was several hundred. Timpsons will programme keys for 150 quid. Theres 500 quid just to turn on your motor. Ludicrous imo.

Getting a Cat D is def worth looking at.
As D2 prices are low, it doesnt take much to write one off now, Copart have a few, also Cat U is worth a look.
Copart have listed D2,s as Cat D before and all they had was cracked front bumper and missing lights.
They have a few D3/4 if your feeling brave, temped myself but no funds yet!
Interestingly they usually also have cars listed as write offs with just mechanical damage.
It will always be on the register so it will affect resale price, but it doesnt affect re-insuring.
My colleague has a Cat D Fiesta Diesel, cracking car, fully loaded, around 4K cheaper than non Cat cars.
