Hi,
Just wondered how many other people have been lied to by Jaguar Land Rover in respect of non-existent faults on their vehicles? I recently took my very expensive Range Rover Sport to my local dealer (Inchcape, King's Lynn, Norfolk) with a faulty rear seat entertainment DVD player. Got told that the technician had checked it out and when I specifically asked, was told that all plugs were connected. Was then told that it needed a software update, which would cost £350 in addition to the initial £225 investigation fee. Also got told that should the update not work, it may render the head unit useless, which would cost over £3000 to replace. However, took my car to an independent dealer in respect of another issue and asked them to cast their eyes over the DVD player issue and guess what, it was nothing more than a loose plug! Have complained to JLR to no avail, completely dismissive and arrogant in their poor response, the manager not even replying to my initial letter and the complaints team leader only responding when I chased her up! Very, very, poor customer service with a completely non-effective complaints process. Needless to say, would never use JLR main dealership again and would deter anyone else from doing the same.

I assume the service peep told you they wouldn't have missed a bad connection and they did check for that?

More likely the mechanic missed it and service just gave assurance they did their best. But we'll never know.

Updates don't fix stuff that worked and suddenly stopped working. An update might improve something that works.

Unfortunately I don’t think this is LR specific, your experience could apply to any manufacturer main dealer nowadays. Time and time again there are instances like this posted on the net. Wouldn’t trust any main stealer.

Nor is deception confined to main stealers. I had our daily fitted with four new tyres at my local Formula One auto centre recently & when the time came to pay the guy on reception stated categorically (ie using words such as 'knackered') that my front discs were worn way beyond limits. Seeing as the car passed it's MOT only 2k previously & my trusted local garage had since carried out a full service I thought 'yeah right, asshole' o_O
Sure enough a precautionary (extra) check on the discs by my local guy (who is also an MOT tester, but did not carry out the original test) confirmed that although lipped the components posed no problems at all.

I wouldn’t dare have a Range Rover etc, unless it was under manufactures warranty. I would be terrified every time it needed to go in to the garage.
Even if you can afford main dealers garage costs, I’ve found that a lot of the mechanics/ technicians are out of their depth with modern cars.
I recently had an issue with the wipers on my wife’s new Subaru. The main dealer technician was struggling to sort the fault. I asked to speak to him, and his diagnosis was way off. I actually spent 20 mins with him, helping him work through the fault (I’m an electrical engineer) and we sorted it.
They weren’t trying to rip me off. The guy was just out of his depth!

That’s because a lot of these mechanics are underpaid, and come straight outta weatherspoons kitchen with a weeks intense course in mechanics
