if you went to a dealer, the cam belt wold have been changed, its too much a risk if it was to fail to them, am sure they would. if youre a member of the rac, or aa, they will check this for £25

This "warranty" that they refer to is always offered in addition to your basic statutory consumer rights - and is often used as a smokescreen for your real rights.

In England, you have the right to a repair, replacement or refund for up to 6 years after a purchase. The remedy you can get depends on the nature of the fault and how soon you discovered it.

Don't let dealers take you for a ride!!

5k for a ,97 plate? How did this turn out Jay?

Personally I wouldn't buy a vehicle like an old disco from a dealer.

I got my dec 97 reg'd 300tdi 2 weeks ago from a private seller for 2.6k, and it had nearly 2k spent on a new engine less than 22k miles ago as well as a new heavy duty clutch less than 1k miles ago.

I went to look at 6 others before buying the one I did, 4 were trade and 2 were private. All 4 of the trade disco's had something wrong with them, and I'm pretty sure the rot in 2 of them would of failed the next MOT. However the 3 (inc the one I bought) private cars were much much better, well looked after and the people where honest.

The dealer to his credit put nearly everything right so far with just a few minor bits like rev lights to sort out, however it does go to show that he who shouts loudest get things done.

I went back to the dealer in the first instance and screemed at him because i thought i was getting a top end 1996 TDI300-S model and thats why i was paying the £4995, it did infact come with a new cam belt change and service along with a new MOT and he says the book price for the low millage (92K) and it being an S model the price is justified at £4995 which included the 3 month warranty as well.

To make up for things and to keep his local reputation good he has offered me the £4995 back as a trade-in on a 04 Discovery 3 (S model) and i have to give him £16000.... ouch, or a nice 04 TD5 Pursuit and i give him £9000...

I wonder should i stick with the TDI300 as its now nealry perfect or trust him againg and pay another 9000 grand of my hard earned ?....

How decent of them - give us another wad of cash and we will sell you another car!

My advice would be to keep the vehicle if it seems to have been fixed but do two things.

1) Get another independant inspection done on it. It may cost you a few quid but then you will have a better idea of its condition after the dealer says they have done all the work.

2) Insist on a free extension on the warranty. If the car was sold with a 3 month warranty, insist they renew it to start when all the problems have been fixed. That way you will have time to tell if they have bodged any of the jobs or done them properly.

If they sold you the car for 5k and have spent countless hours and money fixing it up, it gives you an indication of what they must have paid for it!

Just my opinion but I do hope it all works out for you.

Funny thing is, I have always had problems when buying expensive cars (especially from dealers) but all the 'bangers' I have bought for a few hundred quid have run perfectly. Maybe the expectation is less but I now refuse to spend more than a couple of thou on a car. If the worse comes to the worse, I can only lose a bit of money but over the years, it has proven to be much cheaper than buying 'decent' or nearly new cars.

Never, ever, buy a new car, and if at all possible buy your car from a person you know can be trusted.

It isn't easy, but it works when you can do it.

The two words "honest" and "dealer" are mutually exclusive, as in 'police' and 'marksman', and "boy racer" and "good driver".

Totally agree with you there mike, in 25yrs of buying cars ive alway bought one from a mate or a mates mate etc you know where you stand as they arnt going to intentionally stuff you. this is the first time ive ever bought from and trusted a dealer !,

Its been a good learning curve in life, i think ill keep the Disco 300 and the balance in the bank and put it towards future repairs if and when they come.

I think the disco is great fun to own and drive and will be keeping mine for some future fun off roading

Is the 300tdi in good structual condition? Solid boot floor and foot wells etc? If it is then it might be worth hanging onto it if your confident that the garage has sorted everything.

Look at it this way.

You have two Disco options: the one you have, and the other one.

BOTH are Discoveries. There will be hardly any difference between them in any respect. Both are well-used cars.

But ONE of them comes with NINE GRAND IN YOUR BANK!

Yes the boot floor is in good shape and there is no rust in the arches anywhere there was a a few rust holes along both side sills between the seats and pedals but the dealer welded and painted both sides

Infact there insnt much rust to talk about anywhere to knowledge. (im no expert mind you)

I did spend the first 2 weeks sealing the alpine glass and a few other minor jobs myself. No leaking sunroofs at the mo (no yet !)

I think CharlesY summed it up for me...keep the TDI300 and save going into dept :D
