Hello everyone, hope u having better xmas than me, got all ready to take wife n kids to pics on xmas eve but disco didnt wont to go to town,it just clickd a couple relays from drivers side under bonnet starter does attempt to turn or clunk im hoping it is the starter solinoid and not immobizer fault got no warning lights on dash but 2 wks ago warning light came on to say water in fuel sedimentor but went off 5 mins later.Any ideas?
 
Just gave the starter motor a good good belting with a lump of 2x2 timber and hammer and got my better half to turn the key and she fired up have stop- started her about a dozen times with no problems so guess the fault was soleniod related,but have noticed that the magic eye on the battery is black and that says it is not healthy but it still turning the engine i reckon battery is the original so 5 years old ish could be time to replace as part of winter service :) hope this helps someone :)

Ive bin ****tin mine fer the last 6 months It dose the same as yours every few weeks or so.Usually when yer dunt want it too.

If yer look at yer starter from underneith yer can see the connections, 1 x nut , and 1 x push on spade connector, easy enuff t disconnect and give em a good clean up an costs yer nowt :rolleyes:

No I reckon thats what got it going - we had a "startin" stick in our 300tdi for a number of months before the starter got taken care of, if it didn't start we gave it a belt with the stick and away it went everytime.

Next time you have a few hours spare drop the starter strip it and clean it up, most likely the solenoid will be sticking and the knock will be enough to free it off a bit.

Because the solenoid is a powerful electro-magnet, it will attract every little bit of loose iron or steel dust, and then it gets sticky.

It isn't a desperate job to strip and clean a solenoid, but you will probably need a decent soldering iron.

This is a common fault with the TD5 - the contacts inside the solenoid wear and cause an intermittent starting fault. Have a search on the forum - someone did post info a while back on where to purchase replacement contacts, otherwise you will likely need to replace the starter motor (as I did!)
 
Yep def,starter as its dropped out again when wife took it to town 3 days ago, bashed it again and started first flick,I ordered a new starter from island 4x4 a bargain at £95 quid including next day deliv. so its looks like me on deck in morning to swap units over,thanks for replies it really helps with opinions from other members in sim situation.ONCE AGAIN THANKYOU.
 
When changing the motors over, one of the bolts holding the starter in place is more difficult to reach - you have to do it by feel as you cannot see it. And just to confuse you, its a different size from the other 2 (well it was on my Disco) IIRC it was 1mm different in size but cannot remember if it was smaller or bigger!

I thought all 3 would be the same size and spent ages trying to get the unseen bolt out before I tried a different size socket!
 
Before you buy a new starter the most common fault is the spade connector on the underside of the starter remove it and clean the connectors and put some grease around and in it and that should solve the prob.It is because the water gets on the connector and causes it ti corrode and get a intermitent connection.

That what I thought was wrong with mine, first time I cleaned the connection and all was well for a few days, then I fitted a new spade connector, again all was well for a few days. When I removed the old starter motor, I opened up the solenoid and discovered the worn out contacts.
 
Another quickie to try to stop the hammer abuse is the old lights on then off trick.

I had a dodgy starter on my Mitsi Pajero, and this used to do the same intermitent start issues.

Sometimes (ar*e cover here) if you crank the engine and get nothing, back the key off, turn the lights on to main beam then crank again, as your cranking, turn the lights off. Sometimes is provides enough extra boost in the electrickery to just click the starter over.

Gotta be worth a try before getting abusive........
