Bolt the housing to a piece of stout timber, using its holes. Then clamp the timber in a vice, so you can set to work unscrewing the filter.
 
It never came apart, or at least not yet, despite Stillsons etc.
I was able to pick up a BNIB oil filter mount for peanuts on theBay so I fitted that this afternoon. Swapped the sensor over, fitted the new filter (firm hand-tight, smear of oil on the rubber seal), filled with oil and started the engine. Oil pressure light still on after 10 seconds so turned off.
Oil gushing out between the filter and housing.
Snugged it up a bit more with an oil filter wrench.
Topped the oil back up.
Started engine again.
****ing everywhere, same place.
Ran out of patience and oil.
In the pic you can see the last drips of oil collecting on the shiny bits.

I've had that before an an old mondeo where the thread the filter spins on to was loose on in the housing so had to be tweaked up with 2 large nuts screwed on to the thread so they locked together then turned the outer most one to tighten the thread.without damaging it

I'll have it apart at the weekend if I get a chance, but the centre threaded part looked like a solid part of the casting.
Once I get the filter off I should be able to see how well the seal was mated to the housing.
First thought was whether they changed the housing design/filter at some point in the production run. Have I got a new housing with an older filter??
 
it could also be that the thread is too long for the filter so when you nip it up your not nipping it up against the seal but on the end of the thread leaving the seal loose, have the filter off and see if there is any obstructions or sign the thread has bottomed out in the filter
 
Sound the idiot klaxon....
So I resolved the oil leak incident and it was entirely my fault.
On the side of the oil filter mount there is a blanking plug with a 3/16 allen head. I didn't notice this on the old mount as it was so caked in crap and I was so preoccupied trying to remove the filter. No blank in the new mount.
Oddly no oil was dripping out before I started the engine.

Why redesign an oil filter mount to be like a feckin Swiss cheese?
No idea what size or shape should go in here.....
 
cant you hacksaw off the old filter from the old mount then re use it?
I've got most of it off as you can see from the comparison photo, but the 'base plate' bit with the holes in is stuck fast. How something that spends its life soaked in oil can get so stuck is beyond me.
If I can't sort the new one pronto then I'll get one of a local scrappy.
