Hi,

I recently had a MOT Failure on the basis that my ABS warning light was not working.

Having checked the fuse and found this to be ok, i then removed the dash cluster to look at the bulb, however i am now a little confused as it appears to be LEDs and not traditional bulbs.

The next bit that confuses me is that in the receptacle for ABS and TC, there does not appear to be an LED fitted?

Are these removable / replaceable?

Is there anyway that my vehicle could have passed a previous MOT without them being fitted?

I ask the last question as my vehicle was bought with an MOT that is currently still valid but has now failed on for this fault? this tells me i could have been sold a vehicle with a "Dodgy MOT"...!

any and all advice is appreciated.

what year Freelander is it

i thought they were all either 284/286 bulbs or least my 2000 model is as i had the bulbs missing for my TC/HDC and my abs light was wired up to go off after a few 2nds of the igition being turned on
 
They are not bulbs, they are tiny wee surface-mount LED's. They dont look like normal LEDS, they are just teeny wee flat rectangles soldered to the circuit board.
Not easy to replace. The caveman that owned mine before me had chiselled them off to hide faults so I ended up replacing the whole instrument cluster.

mine is a 2001 TD4.

My issue (and annoyance) is that it had a new MOT when i bought the vehicle. the vehicle has now been tested and failed for the light being inoperative.

now i have checked and yes the little square LED is not present.

can I replace the missing LED? and if so, how simple is it to do?

speak to your local computer/laptop repair shop they tend to be good micro solders thats if you dnt want to pay for a new set of clusters and not able to solder it yourself

I shall now get a new unit from Ebay.

I am still curious to know if the absence of these lights does result in an MOT failure? if so, how come it is a common trick?

at the same time, is there a way of Adjusting the Mileage to reflect that which my car has actually done?

Yes it will fail if an Abs light is on all the time or fails to display the 2 second or so bulb test.
 
checking for the lights is a recent addition to the MOT.
AFAIK they have to light up then go out for the ABS, other lights are an advisory, but not a fail as these can be brought on by spurious faults.

This really is not good. I spoke with a seller on eBay today (a shop) and they cannot confirm if the item they have for sale has all the LEDs or not...!!! This really does put,me,in a,bloody bad position.
 
can you find some suitable LED's online and not just speak to your local electronic shop

ie mobile phone repair
laptop repair man

someone with the micro soldering equipment to just solder you 2 new LED in to the clocks u have now

This is an issue as I am not in the UK and a different approach to motoring / language does not help in this matter

Indeed this is why I am annoyed and why I was asking about the MOT. You see I bought the car from a garage in Eastbourne, and when I did, it came with a new MOT that I asked about. The response from the garage was

"yes the mot has now been done, the only advisory is, play in prop-shaft bearing"

So you see, if the missing light is indeed an MOT failure, the I have been sold a car with a dodgy MOT from a garage....!

I think the new MOT regs came in 1 January - when did you buy the car?
I am not in the UK either (France permanently) and I am sure this warning light test addition is Europe wide in which case I will have the same problem as you when I need my next Controle Technique - thankfully every 2 years here. Mine came with a clean CT as well, dated November (I bought in January)

When we moved back to the UK last year, we had to get the speedo changed on Er Indoors Mitsubishi Colt as it only read in Kms. Bought a UK cluster from a breakers which had a higher mileage than the original. Looked on Google and sent the UK cluster off to a guy near Tewkesbury who reset the odometer to the figure I wanted which was the mileage conversion of the metric speedo. Cost me £60 and he turned it round the same day.
Dunno if the F/L is the same but on the P38 the mileage is also stored in the Becm and if the speedo is replaced the odometer will update itself to the higher stored value, e.g. if say the replacement speedo has 32000 on it and the Becm has 95000 stored, the odometer will jump to 95000. If however the new speedo has say 140000 miles showing (Stored) and the Becm has 95000 stored, the 140000 will remain showing on the odometer and the Becm will update to a stored value of 140000.
The solution in this case is to have the odometer reset to a slightly lower figure than may be stored in the body ECU before actually plugging it into the car and the odometer should update to the correct figure give or take 100 miles or so.
