Then you are buying the wrong version. Although it seems counter intuitive, the 4.4TDV8 is more efficient - I get over 30mpg from mine. Reason beating it has an awesome 8 speed gearbox. I have done over 100,000 miles and still going strong - though I hate to tempt fate on here as last time I said that the oil pump disintegrated the next day.

Look around, get one with the Harman Kardon entertainment upgrade, (built in screens in the rear), and I’d look for a version with the facelift and the digital screen, Look for front heated and cooling seats and rear heated seats.

Might cost a bit more than £4K - but what you spend in buying it will save you in diesel and maintenance.

Your wife will love it even more, especially if you find one that the spoiler is not falling off of and the tailgate opens!

However, I may be suggesting something that blows the budget - I’m not sure that this is available before 2010 - and that’s a bit of a step up.

Lots of info to think about.

Budget is £4,500 max,if I move over to the v8 petrol that opens up a lot more choice but just can’t imagine the mpg to be the same as a diesel.
Did think about a disco 3 but the wife seems to like the rangie better.
I know you don’t but a rangie for its mpg

IMO the V8 isnt that much more expensive to run. OK you get less mpg but the fuel is cheaper and unlikely to be banned so soon.

Does the £4500 leave enough for a £2k gearbox rebuild in your piggy bank? :)

no
Wife wants a new car,had no idea what to get, I stupidly suggested a disco 3 or rangie and the wife now wants a rangie
I was only thinking about a diesel because of mpg.
Apart from our regular ish trips up to Lowestoft (120 miles each way) we only do low mileage so to be honest I’m probably worrying about nothing.
Are the early v8 gearbox’s the same as the diesel ones,ie crap and only good for 80,000 ish miles
As said if I go for a v8 petrol is does open up the choice of cars ten fold

That opens a whole new can of worms. These vehicles do not like short hops. The amount of power it draws to just start up, is immense, in comparison to most other vehicles of it's class/ age. That then needs to be replaced , or you will have battery issues, and the big yellow van will visit, often.

i would have thought a 10min run should put enough back :) but totally get where your coming from

I rarely get more than 20mpg on my 16 mile commute to work into Manchester, I did manage 32mpg on a trip from Manchester to Cornwall last year. MY2005 L322 TD6.
In 12 months I spent just over £2k on gearbox rebuild, droplinks, suspension arms etc. If you can do your own spannering you can run one on a budget, if not it will no doubt bankrupt you.
That said they are still a great place to be, just don't look at the fuel guage or your bank account :)

I don't mean to be rude but I am giving advice as someone who has owned an L322 for 10years. You are assuming that you are dealing with whatever you are used to. So I will say as nicely as I can 10 minutes is not long enough for a 1.0L panda, without any electronics, apart from a radio. It certainly is nowhere near enough for a 3L 4x4 with more toys than the space shuttle!

your not being rude at all :)
Wife currently runs a rover 75 diesel estate, she always has the radio and heater on full every time she’s moves the thing and I’m the summer she puts the air con on and so far no problems concerning power but as you say quadruple the power needed to fire up everything up I can see what your saying.
Yes I can do most of my own spannering,I need to on my 1968 triumph as that thing always needs bits doing :(

Ok folk
