Old thread but to answer some questions then yes the police could seize the footage as evidence and no they don't need a warrant. And yes it could be used to work out your speed with or without gps. Investigations into accidents have successfully used shop cctv to work out speed of cars involved. However given police resources at the moment it would have to be a serious accident for them to go to these lengths. Insurance companies however would not be able to seize footage but would be more disposed to using it. It therefore follows that unless you are in the habit of going out and driving dangerously on a regular basis the dash cam will protect you and not be likely to incriminate you.
