Hi folks

The passenger footwell in our freelander is wet with a red/orange oily liquid. Although the same colour as antifreeze it is oily to the touch but doesnt smeel like red gearbox oil. Any ideas? Nigel

leaking heater matrix or one of the pipes that go to it, red oat coolant mix is what you are finding

Thanks folks
It does have OAT antifreeze so it sounds as though its the heater matrix though will check the pipes first.

Almost certainly it's the heater matrix. There is a large ribbed hose feeding the heater, feel the bottom of it and see if your hand is wet.
We had a slow leak from ours for about a year, never got any worse but being a V6 we constantly watch coolant level and finally decided to replace the matrix. Had a Landrover part fitted which cost £200, you can get cheaper substitutes. The total bill with vat was £600!!! Main dealer will want more.
It is difficult to dry out the carpet, soak in soapy water then rinse and dry with towels, do this a lot of times. OAT doesn't dry out of it's own accord.
Hope this helps, you have a lousy problem.
