For years I kept my D2 and my 110 before that in the garage only to be used at the weekends.
After having my new car scratched in the works carpark (door to door, formed small dent as well) less than 3 months after buying it, I have for the past 3 weeks been using the D2 back and to for work whilst my new car sits in the garage at home following its repair.
OK I've done many jobs on the D2 since its purchase; springs and shock absorbers, cylinder head gasket and dowels, steering box, battery and chassis restore and waxoyling; but the D2 drives brilliant, starts every morning and isn't drinking fuel (though 1/3rd of a tank on the gauge may be more money than my new car certainly).
Point is, having pampered the D2 and fixed the LR failures, its a damn good vehicle and a brilliant and reliable daily runner; it doesn't even take too long on these cold mornings to get the heater up to temperature. The best thing is its fun to drive to and from work and I worry far less about the carpark dangers.
Big dilema now, dont want to get the new car scratched again but if i'm not using it whats the point of having it?
I normally tinker with my LR most weekends and having a main vehicle means I don't have to finish the jobs for monday morning. I'd like to drop the sump and check/upgrade the oil pump bolt so I will need to have the main car available whilst I do it.
Do I continue to use the D2 as a daily runner and keep the new car for best?
Do I just accept that scratches happen and run the new car until it dies and continue to pamper the D2?

They happen. My lad has just bought a Golf R and it’s great to drive, however he tends to borrow my D2 as he is scared of getting dinks in his. I suppose due to the size of the disco it’s almost impossible for anyone to park next to you in a car park.

Its so frustrating having a lovely car and people dink it or drag their laptop bag up the side of it as they walk past!! No sure I’ll ever have a nice car as a daily again.
The other thing to think of; if it is an expensive car, using your d2 is keeping the miles off it and stopping your commute miles depreciating it

Why not use the D2? It's not going to melt. I've been using mine as a daily driver for 10 years now and have no intention to change (except of course when I use the bikes!)

Having said that, as mentioned the D2 is a big beast and sometimes hard to find an appropriate parking spot.

My daughter when she was younger swung a door on my new car that was a couple of months old and put a dent in it. My car is half the price to run compared to the disco. The Post Office morris minor telephone vans years ago used to have rubber front wings according to my mate who drove one.

Yes thats the point the car is so cheap to run compared to the D2. If it were 2 or 3 years old it wouldn't be an issue.
The D2 is though a very nice commute; its just the fuel costs are higher.

Did think of using the bikes for work but its getting dressed and undressed at each end that puts you off.
Having said that I only had a bike for the first 5 years of work; younger then.
I guess the point I was making is that the D2 is an excellent vehicle when its sorted and although its my fun vehicle for the weekend I really do think its quite a gem.
Auto box is essential to this but what a gem and if it used less fuel i wouldn't need anything else.
However, I think i'll have to consider using the new car again to keep fuel costs down.

I'd use the d2 daily.

Tbh it's built to be driven, fuel economy however is rather poor, I average 23mpg.
Compared to a V8 P38 that did 18 o_O
And a Jag that did 30 :confused::D

so horses for courses, i'd personally never buy new, its prolly costing you more being sat on the drive than the D2 is being driven, if you consider depreciation.

How long do you intend on keeping this new car?
