Hello everyone.

1st post here for me.

I've been doing up a 200tdi D90 and have finally got it running. I went on a 160 mile (mad?) round trip to collect a head lining.
On the way back we seem to have developed quite a loud squealy noise on overrun. Depressing the clutch on overrun makes the sound go away. Is this an unhappy LT77 or maybe the Trany?
Any help please.
Also to add to my woes and although the 200tdi runs great with no smoke etc, the oil light comes on and stays on at anything under 20mph once the engine has warmed up. I fitted a new switch as part of the restoration. I assume the crank / shells are very worn.
If I end up having to remove the gearbox, can I then remove the crank and get it sorted or is it an engine out....

best way of checking oil light put a presure gauge on it remove the switch and connect a presure gauge even tho you fitted another switch it could still be a faulty switch, as for the squeeling does is it squeal when stationary if it does it sounds like thrust bearing on the clutch, or it could be a loose pipe around the inlet manifold, but as you say the noise goes when clutch pressed indicating it is the thrust bearing,

No there's no nasty sounds whilst stationary. The sound is a mixture of squeal with a bit of scrape and and only on overrun. It turns heads as we approach (Hmmm). Pretty sure it's not an inlet or other engine problem.
 
Squeal problem,
If the noise is coming only on the overrun then it is linked to a thrust bearing in the transmission. When you put the clutch in you are disconnecting the engine breaking load from the transmission. If it's the gearbox / transfer box I would expect the noise to come from under your feet / seat, if the back axle then more to the rear.

I'd start by checking the oil levels, but you could remove one of the prop shafts at a time and test drive it to eliminate the diffs.

It can't be the clutch release bearing as it only rotates when your foot is on the clutch.

Well it's not leaking on the drive, but perhaps it all fell out on the run :suspicious: !

Bit dark to check now, job for the morrow.
Could be worth checking that the front prop u/j s arn't dry and worn.
I had a similar sound which I put down to being in the clutch area when it turned out to be a very worn and dry front prop u/j at the transfer box end. This noise also went away when the clutch was depressed etc.

Just a thought:)
 
ive started getting this with my defender. i dont have a central gear/trany box covering or floorwell coz i had some diff issues, and looking down it seems the squealing comes from the front prop!

Ok will all the UJ / Propshaft people please go to the top of the class :)

The UJ just in front of the Tranfer Box is way way beyond the help of any fresh grease :doh:

Think I'll be checking out the bay for a pair of good props.

Are they all the same 200/300/TD5 ?

Just change the UJ - they are only about a fiver and about half an hours work. A spare prop is useful if yours is lifted tho. Make sure yu go for a decent make - and with grease nipples.
